Humor

Did anybody notice there were some moments of humor in the film? Several. One I especially noticed was when the head priest moved in with Anatoly and set up his blanket on the coals. He felt under the blanket and tossed a piece of coal aside, as if to say, "Oh, that one hurts!" The humor was subtle, but a nice touch.

Yep, in some scenes Anatoli mocks the other monks. In particular father Iov and father Filaret. Why he does it? That's the question. Was he only a prankster having a good time at the expense of his brothers or was he nuts? or both?

Or maybe he wanted to show them, in a manner resembling that of the ancient greek cynics (who were an ethical school that criticized vice using the same tool of mockery - a foremost representative character being that of Diogenes of Sinope), that pride and complacency are incompatible with the (orthodox) christian ethos.

I found that a very nice touch of the film. How could a priest ever be offended by a prank while he himself is preaching something that he is not absolutely sure about it's truth? Isn't that the biggest prank?
