Farewell my Concubine wannabe?

Just because the film is about Peking Opera and his helmed by the same director does not mean it's a knock off or "wanna be." This film is a biopic about the man largely considered the greatest dan ever.

Was reading some of the comments of some who have seen the film and they said it was very similar. Its a shame.

I can see where there would be some similarities since it was said that Lillian Lee, the author of Farewell My Concubine actually modeled the character of Cheng Dieyi after Mei Lanfang. I hope it's not so similar that the majority of people end up feeling the way those you spoke of do. I am really hoping this one will be a success for Kaige since he has never made a film as brilliant as FMC, in my opinion. In my mind, he really can't TOP that movie as I think it's the greatest ever made.

I have seen it twice. In my opinion, Meilanfan is better than Farewell My Concubine. Better acting in whole, better Peking Opera performances, better script and directing, and many real sets ans locations.

It's "Mei Lanfang". And the Amer/English title is "Forever Enthralled".
