Or Wikipedia for that matter. The big picture is there. General knowledge of WWI and surrounding events and circumstances can be found quite easily:
Just read about German unification (and Weimar republic, Otto von Bismarck), end of the Russian Empire (February revolution and October revolution, Emperor Nicholas II), British colonial Empire and Edwardian era, Balkan wars (Black hand), end of the Ottoman empire (Kemal Atatürk, Tanzimat reforms), Habsburg family and Austria-Hungary (and the Royal Prince Franz Ferdinand), Italian unification (Italian colonialism, Futurism), Crimean war and most importantly about Franco-Prussian war of 1870. Also of importance is the Congress of Vienna (1814-1815) and Spring of Nations (1848), Marxism, Prussian history in general, Russification of Finland, Russo-Japanese war (1904-1905), Opium Wars, Border War between the U.S. and Mexico and the Progressive era of Theodore Roosevelt in the U.S.
These, in addition to articles related directly to World War I, should give you plenty of information about the early 20th century world.
