The Dread Central review explains it:
"An explanation for this comes in the form of a quickie featurette with Asylum honcho David Michael Latt. You see Latt used to throw elaborate Halloween parties 20 years ago that often involved an elaborate prank being pulled on the guests. One of these Halloween parties was being held at a secluded house in the woods and on the way there they found out that someone escaped from a mental institution in the area. When the prank designed to scare the crap out of everyone went down, the partygoers were especially freaked out because they thought it was the escapee having crashed their party."
So, somehow this qualifies as grounds to claim "Based on True Events."
So, to paraphrase from the latter portion of the review, I could trip down some stairs, and make a movie about going down stairs that lead to h ell, and proclaim my film "Based on True Events."
Oy.

shareMost of the time "Based on True Events" is an actual claim. But Asylum used it as a marketing gimmick to increase the effectiveness of their film, and it just didn't work. Because it WASNT based on true events. The idea may have come from something that happened, but that's not based on true events. It's misleading and deceitful.

I liked this one!!Gimmick or not I loved Miss Roby in Exorcism and loved her more in this! I have had the pleasure of meeting a couple of the Asylum actors at Comicon and was very impressed with them. You however seem to hate every one of the Asylum films, so my question to you TerminalMadness is why do you keep watching there films??Just a question??

I would tend to disagree. Most movies that claim to be based on true events are about as true as the story that you said this movie was based on.
Look at movies like the Texas Chain Saw Massacre, that is about as "true" to the Ed Gein story as Halloween Night is true to the "true story" that it's based on...
Same with Silence of the Lambs. Most horror movies based on a true story take HUGE liberties, even most of the ones that are named after the true story on which they're based (as I understand the new "Ed Gein" movie to be this way).
Look, I have never seen this film, so I cannot say if this film has anything to do with this case. But from reading the back of the DVD at Hollywood Video, it sounds like this film is based on the case of Kevin Cooper, who is on Death Row in California for the June 4, 1983 murders of a Chino, CA family. Cooper escaped from a nearby prison two days before the killings. You can find his case on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Cooper_(inmate) .
I saw the case on 48 Hours Mystery on CBS a while back. I was tempted to rent the video, by a lot of what Asylum puts out is ultra low budget crap and not worth paying for a new release.
If anyone who has seen this film and knows anything about this case to compare, please feel free to comment. Like I said, I haven't seen the film.
Nope. The only relevance is the killer's backstory of witnessing his own family getting killed. But that plot point takes up maybe 3 to 5 minutes of the actual movie, so I'm not sure if that would count as being based on true events. Basically, that tag line is about as big a lie as "Snake on a Train" claiming "100 passengers and 1000 deadly vipers". More like maybe a dozen passengers and a few garden snakes (with the occasional python and CG monster snake thrown in).

shareDamn they tricked me, I was reading the end credits & it even came up with the fact they lied! I glad I'm not the only one tricked by this, it is an ok movie, i guess even if the makers lied to get viewers !

Just saw this movie after renting it a few days ago. Where does it say they lied about it being based on true events? I thought it was based on actual events. I need to think about this again. The movie was just okay though.
shareA movie based on true events is not always the exact same story, sometimes it is only loosely based on true events (Lonely Hearts Killers, Kemper, etc.). Sometimes it is only based on certain parts of the events. Like The Strangers.
For Silence of the Lambs, it is the character of the killer that is based on a true person (rather, 3 real-life killers: Ted Bundy, Ed Gein and Gary Hednick).
