Was the principal religiously intolerant?

Rochel's outburst at the principal is making me wonder. On one hand, the principal insisted everybody learn how to pronounce "Rochel", instead of going with the less foreign "Rachel". But on the other hand, she scoffed at Rochel's bracelet thing as a superstition.

I think she was intolerant. She ridiculed both main characters' clothing, among other things.

It had nothing to do with religious intolerance. The principal disliked the notion of cultural traditions and superstitions. That's why she criticized the way both women were dressed. She even criticized the young blind boy's belief that the wristband Miriam was wearing had cured his cousin from Puerto Rico of leukaemia. She preferred people leave superstitions behind and adhere to more modern American concepts and philosophies.
