'Big Shots' on NBC?

In case ABC axes "Big Shots," do you think that it has the NBC factor?

reply

Probably not. In general, networks don't pick up other networks cancelled shows.

Plus I can't see Big Shots fitting in on NBC. Maybe FOX, but not NBC or CBS.

That's not ture. "In the Heat of the Night" was either a ABC or NBC show. The network did not like the demos so it cancelled the show. In other words, they fired their audience, something CBS used to their advantage when promoting the move. CBS said, if you don't want those viewers we will take them. The show was picked up by CBS and ran for many years as a very popular show. Not only did the CBS show do well, it pulled in the demos the other network wanted. The cancelling of that show was considered the "bonehead" move of the decade.

I like Big Shots, but it's ratings aren't that good. Right now everyone is saying that ER isn't doing well enough to get renewed and it's beating Big Shots. No other network is going to pick this one up if ABC drops it. It's too expensive.

I said in general. The ratio of cancelled shows that go on to pop up on another network is slim to none. For the most part when one network cancels it, it's just gone. Why would a network want to pay millions for the rights to inherit a failed program, that another lost millions with, and ultimately had to chuck?

ITHOTN is one of the few exceptions, and that's primarily because it became an established series, with an established audience and sponsorship, before it transferred to CBS from NBC. It had enough followers and revenue to keep the momentum going on another network after NBC pulled the plug. Big Shots doesn't have a strong following of its own. It's heavily surviving off of hold over ABC Thursday night viewers who're forgetting to change the channel after Grey's Anatomy goes off.

These days the big four (ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX) networks are more and more producing their own series and are even less likely to pick up something canned by one of its competitors. The O.C. couldn't even find another network after FOX dumped it.

Other than on a newer (and smaller) network like the CW, if Big Shots is cancelled by ABC, I don't see it coming back to life. The only other option would be syndication...but I doubt that any of the leads (Vartan, McDermott, Titus, Malina, Long) would concede to the smaller fanfare and budget (or the inevitable pay cut) of syndication.

it won't happen if the show is cancelled, it's cancelled.

First of all, ITHOTN was cancelled after one season. It was not an established series. CBS took a big gamble when the took the show. It was the add campaign that brought the viewers over. "IF THEY DON'T WANT YOU, WE DO," add that angered viewers and caused them to follow the show over. Plus all of the critics joined the refrain.

Big Shots has good numbes compared to its competition. There is the flap over the show not being able to retain the huge numbers it receives from Greys during the first half hour. However the mumbers in the second half hour are really decent numbers and sponsors still want to buy time.

If hey cancelled it, who would hey replace the show with? C'on, that would be like throwing the baby out with the bath water. Before the cancelled the show they would change the night it airs. Monday nights anyone (after Monday Night football ends)?

djc, if you're going to use examples, at least get the facts right. IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT was on for FIVE seasons when it went from NBC to CBS. Not to mention that NBC didn't cancel it. They never got the opportunity to. The contract was up, NBC hemmed and hawed, and the producers went to CBS, who snatched it away. (NBC then said it was canceled... after they lost the rights to it.) Additionally, while it was a Top 30 show on NBC, it did not get the same ratings on CBS (who were the ones who ultimately canceled it). The only thing it got were the old-skewing demos that it had on NBC. Yeah, there's a big gamble that really paid off.

Not counting the WB/UPN merger, I can't think of a whole lot of shows that have jumped networks the past few years. GROUNDED FOR LIFE went from FOX to the WB... and bombed. MEET MY FOLKS went from NBC to My Network TV... and hasn't even done well enough to be considered merely a bomb. That's about all I can think of.

In short, nobody else is going to want this show when ABC cancels it. Not if. When.

LMAO, they've probabbly decided already to cancel it, they just haven't gotten around to announcing it yet.

The show isn't canceled and in the final numbers with the GA overrun taken out Big Shots is only slightly lower than DSM in viewers and is higher in the 18-49 demo. This show isn't out of the running for a full season order by any means. ABC really has no idea what their other shows are going to do in midseason. With the strike BS could have a chance because ABC won't cancel it before they see what the other shows do.

The other thing the other night when ABC showed WMC, it proved that the GA numbers mean nothing to the show after it. In fact WMC actually did worse on Thursday and Friday, and was reported that BS actually had better numbers.
