Underrated

"Epic" is coming off as a bit underrated in my opinion. Of course it is my opinion and it seems that I might be the only one. I loved the film and I'm 20 and my sister who is 17 also enjoyed "Epic". Sure there are others who are going to hate on it, but they might not be into this sort of thing. That's just their cup of tea...For me I will always be a kid at heart! :)

I agree! I totally loved this! I'm so glad I didn't listen to all the negativity out there. This movie is charming and BEAUTIFUL.

Despite the fact that I feel asleep during part of the movie but I will admit that it was a lot better than I expected it to be.

Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. We watched it yesterday and my wife and I along with our daughters aged 12 & 9 thoroughly enjoyed it. The theater was almost full and I sure got the sense that everybody was entertained as much as us.

As someone who normally avoids animated movies like the plague, I've seen this twice now and have really enjoyed it. When people have asked me what I like about it, I say the following:

1) While true to itself, it doesn't take itself too seriously. In other words, it's good fun.

2) It creates its own world/universe, and makes no pretentions about being "real".

3) It's not ironically self-congratulatory, cynical, or nihilistic.

4) There's no heavy "educational" message - it's not school.

5) The characters (even the villains) are all likeable, and the humor is good-hearted rather than mean-spirited.

6) It's impossible for me to love a movie without also loving the score, and Danny Elfman's music for EPIC is outstanding.

7) The animation is absolutely beautiful - the scenery, animals, and birds all looked very true-to-life.

8) It avoids the breathless hyper-kineticism and silliness-on-steroids of most animated movies.

9) While it's obvious the creators had great fun making the movie, it's also clear they went to excruciating detail to make everything just right.

I first heard about this movie when I saw its trailer before The Hobbit last December. The movie's simple name was easy to remember, and I kept it in the back of my mind. When it was finally released, I read some reviews, and then went to go see it in spite of my distaste for most animated films. I'm so glad I did, and now consider myself a big fan. I've enjoyed finding out that other people have also liked it beyond being just a pleasant "popcorn flick"
diversion.

I find that extremely unfortunate that you treat ALL animated films like a deadly vast spreading disease.

You missing out on some real gems.

reply

I agree. I found it very enjoyable. I will definitely buy the Blu-Ray when it comes out.

reply

agreed. it's one the best children's movie i've seen in a few years.

It's about as underrated as the Original Ice Age (the movie that made me love Blue Sky, and I love Ice Age to bits! It's my favourite movie ever, so full of emotion, laughter, drama, high stakes, well-written characters and arcs, it's so full of depth!) and I love Epic about as much as I love Ice Age (though I love Ice Age more, admittedly, but they both don't deserve how underrated they are, and it makes me so sad. ;_____;

They deserve more appreciation and love.

I have to agree. There's just something about this film's simplicity that combined with the visuals is so refreshing. While there isn't really a single original beat in this film, I think it's approach to utilizing the tried and true is commendably nuanced. I definitely think it's one of the most underrated animated flicks of the past couple of years.
