Bad bad bad???

I am shocked that this movie has only 5.8! This actually ENTERTAINED me which is exactly what a movie should do! I don't get it.
Meg Ryan, William H. Macy, fast lines, classic jokes? What's wrong?
I can only think that the ones who dislike this movie are fans of Jude Appatow crap comedies!

I seriously don't get it!

I think the main problem this movie has is that if you don't really understand Charlie and his motivations within the first minute the rest of the movie is just random.

On the other hand, if you "get" him... and I mean really get him... the movie is just about the funniest thing ever made.

I stumbled upon this movie in the middle of the night on showtime, I think. Even though it was already a quarter into the movie I had to be careful not to wake the other occupants of my home. I was laughing all the time and I'm afraid way out loud. Hugely funny I just couldn't help myself but laugh. Not to mention the things I was thinking like what ever happened to the guy that got kidnapped, did anyone do anything about that or is he still waiting for some one to get him back? No one really mentions him after the first couple of minutes after he was gone. Sometimes it is what isn't there and what isn't said that cracked me up. I loved it and didn't even see the whole thing.

reply

KekeAW, I think he staged his own kidnapping. Just after he finished reading
he seems to give a slight nod to the cameraman. Why he may have I haven't
figured. And later in Prague they spoke of his release and that he was OK

reply

I liked it, too.

I was disappointed. I'm a big MAcy fan and loved DOOR TO DOOR. But this was odd. How does a producer, who's basically washed up, within hours get a $100 million film greenlit? If that was supposed to be funny, it didn't work for me. If Macy's char is so good at "playing the hollywood" game, how did he ever sink so low? He was trying to commit suicide and then he's playing studio execs off of each other like a seasoned pro? I didn't get the concept and the whole film felt odd. Maybe it was just too "hollywood insider cool" for me, but i didn't work.

I feel a 5.8 is WAY too high a rating for this tedious look inside Hollywood. The characters were not likable, the conflict was weak and all I really found myself caring about was the amount of time I wasted watching this film.

reply

"The characters were not likable"

That's not necessarily a liability (well, not for me, that is) in a well-written and portrayed film.

Or television series, for that matter. . . which character in "Seinfeld" would you describe as 'likable?'

"Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana."

reply

But "Seinfeld" was funny, and "The Deal" wasn't. I don't mind spending an hour and a half with unlikable people who make me laugh.

reply

I gave it a 7. I found the first half annoying, but I found that the second half brought it back together and made it worthwhile.

Even if it had remained annoying, I think it would still deserve a 6/10, in comparison to other things I've seen. It had an identifiable plot and characters, was shot well, and I didn't feel that the filmmakers set out to annoy or torture the audience. For me, that's what I reserve 5 and less for -- abusively bad film.

I beg to differ . . . I cannot watch another Judd Apatow movie, but this piece of crap just irked me no end. I kept trying to "get into it", because I'm a fan of both Wm. H. Macy and Meg Ryan . . but Hey! I must have missed something because this reeked of amateurism . . and it wasn't humorous at all. In fact, I've taken it off my PC (watched thru Netflix) and am shocked they starred in this complete & utter mess. So juvenile, so mishmash . . wow! I'd love to write a decent screenplay, and this showed me it's almost impossible, unless you're a total weirdo. Just my take, duuuude.

The acting was good, and the gags were good. But that's all it was, a series of gags. And who the heck thought of pairing up Meg Ryan and William H. Macy? The age difference isn't that great, but the looks difference is! A big turn-off for me.

reply

William H. Macy is a great supporting actor, but piece of crap in leading role, star charisma doesn't come cheap. just to mention one thing.
