GDI Ion Cannon

Something that I've always been curious about since the first games; why don't GDI use the ion cannon more often?

I'm specificially referring to those missions where "Nod has set up yet another base in Blah. Go and destroy it."

Why bother sending in ground troops and have the tedious task of building a base from scratch when you can quickly and effectively target it and destroy it from space right from the beginning? (And then send in ground troops afterwards to mop up)

I understand it takes time to recharge and get in the correct position in orbit, but by the looks of things GDI have several in orbit around the planet.

Also, would it not be an effective weapon to clear heavy amounts of Tiberium in the Red Zones?

I'm sure there is a reason, I'm a little rusty on my C&C knowledge at the moment, its been a while since TibDawn and TibSun. Not to mention EA completely ruined the series with this, so plot holes wouldn't be surprising.

(EA ruined it, but I don't think its a bad game. I do enjoy it. But its nothing compared to the others)

I wouldnt be surprised if that was a major plot hole though. Seems to make sense, for the bases anyway.

The only thing though is when it comes to Tiberium is that, aside from the fact that it'll grow back fast, is that targeting a red zone would be deadly. The explosive value could ignite more Tiberium in neighboring yellow zones. As well, the tiberium would easily spread to yellow zones and even blue zones through radiation and the air when its blown by the Ion cannon.

One thing I picked up was that the ion cannons between cut-scenes and gameplay have an inconsistant strength...

In old C&C games the ion cannon used to be a localised shot that would maybe take out one structure, but in cut scenes, the ion cannon could lay waste to entire cities. (Which rather than a plot hole, could be the ion cannon can have varying strengths depending on how long it's been able to charge for?)

So my theory would be, to take out the bases, use a low strength ion beam, but just enough to take out the base and nothing more, (avoiding Tiberium)

All they need to build next is a few orbiting Sonar platforms and they're set. Heh.

Which cutscenes are you talking about? The gigantic explosion after the Ion Cannon shot at Temple Prime is because it hit Kane's Liquid Tiberium device. All other cutscenes involving the Ion Cannon have it being able to destroy a large building.

What laws? Aren't GDI the law?

Dear, you're the one that seems to have misplaced your chromosome.

GDI is the first army of the UN, the G7 nations passed the act saying that the nations of GDI will give there army to them in a joint command for freedom. There are UN laws in place, GDI does NOT want to look like the Soviet Union did during both WWII and WWIII.

The political spectrum would have vastly changed from the time Tiberium first arrived on earth.

I'm referring to after the 1990s, well into the 21st century, when most member nations have simply been dissolved under the banner of the GDI, and it has assumed the role of sole 'Superpower'

In C&C3 (2047), GDI is the last bastion of the Western and civilized world.
I would find it hard not to believe it's within their own juristicion to deploy the ion cannon when and where they please.

Throughout the era ranging from the events portrayed in Tiberian Dawn until well after the events portrayed in Firestorm, GDI acted on behalf, on the orders and under the review of the United Nations Security Council. By the events portrayed in Tiberium Wars, however, GDI was forced to gradually absorb nearly all of its member states into itself in order to compensate for their collapse as traditional countries and nations, as the result of the critical levels of Tiberium infestation that began to manifest themselves in many regions of the world, regions which would come to be known as "yellow zones" and "red zones". GDI subsequently began to establish its own centralized civilian administration and bureaucracy in response to this emergency. By the year of 2047, GDI had effectively been rendered into the largest military and political superstate in history, tasked with overseeing and protecting the "blue zone" regions of the Earth -- the last refuges of the civilized world.

THAT is what I was talking about.
GDI, in 2047, are their own entity; therefore they will have their own regulations on when and where they can use the ion cannon, and as such aren't bound by UN laws.

I'm not referring to their history.
But then again, you do know all the facts.
