The apathy of people disturbed me even more than the deranged villain

Some of the images in this film will haunt you for awhile. Extremely well made crime film, I liken it to the Snowtown Murders.

Valery was definitely an evil and disturbing person. He knew all along what happened to girlfriend's friend, yet told nobody. In the end, we see him appear somewhere in St Petersburg, leading the same type of careless party life filled with pleasures. In the final scenes we see him recruiting a random guy from club for some kind of shady business venture. The director's message was pretty clear here: guys like Valery will become The New Russians (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Russians) a decade later.

Maybe one of the movie's messages is that indifference can arguably be the worst evil of them all?
