The film does capture the grim provincial life in the final decade of USSR with a good precision. I have witnessed everything, besides the serial killing and rape, that was in this movie in the 1980-90s USSR.
You should probably realize that a truthful film about a serial killer and rapist would be significantly more disturbing. Check out Citizen X, and that one is something like 95% accurate.
