I am surprised that someone would label the film that preserved the grim picture of the final decade of USSR with so much precision as amateurish. The film is very coherent IMHO. Balabanov did make films in the past that were intentionally incoherent and amateurish looking (The Brother series as well as Zhmurki). It was a pretty damning of the corruption within the Soviet system, but ignoring any hidden political messages, it as still a good thriller. If this doesn't thrill someone, I don't know what will. Even Tarantino, the master of over the top violent thrillers and action movies has made somewhat slow films in the past (Kill Bill 2 wasn't any "faster" than this).
