Never, ever pit a Sans Serif (Helvetica) against a Serif (Times [New Roman]).
Both have their uses. Both are needed.
Sans Serif for signs, posters, presentations.
Serif for long texts, books, articles, reports.
I love both of them, and use both of them (Helvetica for Keynote presentations and posters, Times for word processing and writing).
And I pity the fools who don't know when to use which. I have seen tons of lab reports in Arial, and it looks hideous. If I ever have to correct a student's report in a Sans Serif again, I will drop his grade immediately.
