Not in Word Perfect

Having come across this movie in following a thread, I went right to Word Perfect to see what Helvetica looks like. (Maybe that's what I'm typing in right now, for all I know.) But I was amazed to find that this font, that was worthy of an 80 minute movie, is not offered by Word Perfect. Well, I guess I'll have to try Wikipedia if I really want to know what Helvetica looks like.

My favorite opera is Die Valkure. I've always loved horses.

If I'm not mistaken Arial is a variation of Helvetica that Microsoft had developed. That's why you'll find Arial on all Windows computers and not Helvetica. I'm assuming Microsoft was worried they'd have to pay for use of Helvetica.

Here's a bit from the Arial Wiki

"Arial is held in disregard by some professional typographers and type enthusiasts, for reasons relating to its similarity to other typefaces and the involvement of Microsoft in its development and distribution.[5] It is reinforced by Arial's apparent status as a de facto Helvetica stand-in, but without paying royalties, or credit, to Helvetica. "

I had a similar experience to yours when I found, one day, that I didn't have Helvetica on my computer.

Ariel is actually not a knockoff of Helvetica, but rather was based on some fonts which inspired Helvetica. The two fonts are not that similar. Compare, for instance, the uppercase "R" and lowercase "a", two of the most beautiful letters in Helvetica with the Ariel versions.

Arial is an awful, awful font.

To me Arial is very PC whereas Helvetica is very Apple. :)

Hmm...well to each its own.

In Windows Vista and Office 2007, Microsoft seems to be backing away from Vista. The default font is Calibri, which doesn't look like such an obvious Helvetica knock-off.

Has anyone noticed? --this entire discussion is printed in arial/helvetica or some variation thereof.

That's because IMDb has not set a non-standard font for this page. Nearly all other webpages use their own font to assure that the page looks the same on all computers, but the IMDb forums use whatever your browser is set to use. On pretty much all Windows browsers, this standard is Arial. I have mine set to Lucida Bright, which is a Serif font, which I very much prefer to read over nearly all Sans-Serifs.

On Firefox:Mac, the setting is under Firefox:Preferences, Content tab, section "Fonts & Colors", "Default Font". Don't ask me where it is on Windows browsers.

Quite true. If you have an iPod, the display font is Helvetica!

I thought the movie was remiss in not explaining this, particularly after saying that Helvetica was so widespread partly due to computers. After a little research, what I found out was that Apple originally (and perhaps still) used Helvetica. Miscrosoft used Arial rather than pay a licensing fee for Helvetica. Supposedly (according to the article I read) they are nearly identical, particularly when at the scale we see on the PC screen.

Perhaps graphic designers are so thoroughly Mac people that they don't realize MS doesn't seem to have the font Helvetica precisely.

I already knew that MS made arial so it wouldn't have to pay to use Helvetica, but I agree that they should have said something about it in the film.

I bought the complete set with some extra interviews and there is in fact one interview by Erik Spiekermann (the german dude) where he addresses the 'Arial' abomination. He gives Microsoft a much deserved piece of his mind :P Definitely worth watching. Heres a link to his interview in youtube: http://bit.ly/biWbWi
