Hope this doesn't get too popular...

I like how "underground" and unnoticed graphic design is by most people, though I'm glad someone acknowledged the field for a movie and the plethora of information about it.

Indulge those of us on here then. I'm actually only a student of graphic design as I haven't really shadowed anyone yet.

I'm hopeful that this film will open people's eyes to the real art behind good design. The term "graphic designer" has been completely bastardized nowadays, insofar that an office secretary with an arsenal of PowerPoint templates and Word clip art can be dubbed as the companies graphic designer. Like a neon sign artist, truly good design is fading as a lost art.

reply

It doesn't help that nowadays every friggin kid wants to be a graphic/web designer since they figured out how to make animated gifs for their myspace. It has made the market flooded with bad designers running around competing for our jobs.

reply

For every dozen yahoos that think they are artists because they can play around with the filters that came with their bootlegged copies of Photoshop (Oh! Look what happens when I use 'emboss' or 'plastic wrap'!!), there are still those of us out there that love and appreciate the real art of design. Thankfully, there are still plenty of clients out there that realize this. Bad design is bad design, and it's not hard to tell the difference. All it takes for a customer to realize that is to get burned once by someone that doesn't know a vector from a hole in the ground, and they will take more caution in selecting a real artist next time.

reply

well a client will get what they pay for. So i dont see bad designers as a threat. Sure let young "designers" play around on the computer, but what a client really pays for is your ability to think creatively and solve their problem graphically. If you're confident in your abilitys as a great designer, then you should never feel threatend by bad design. i'm more afraid of the really really good designers out there! because it is a very competitive market.

reply

Agreed. I actually wanted to be a graphic designer, but I'm turned-off by how competitive the marketplace is. At this point, it's no longer just about the quality of you work, but how quickly you can put things together. I'm discouraged from being a more active graphic designer...
1 - I consider myself to be slow, although people who aren't in the field accuse me of being very speedy.
2 - I'm not a very competitive person.
3 - I love the concept of gradient mesh, but hate the way it works in practice.

And one must also consider that for every "bad designer" out there, there's a client with low standards willing to pay for his or her work.

Yeah, watch out Titanic and Star Wars and Lord of the Rings and ET and Home Alone and all you other blockbusters.

reply

Oh cool, I get it. This is the forum where all the stuck graphic designers will come to whine about other people getting their jobs, nice!

I've got 60MB more to go from the torrent download, I'll let you guys know how it was.

reply

Oh cool, I get it.

Quite the contrary. We're not the ones downloading a torrent for a $5 movie.

reply

Why waste $5 when you can get for free? You can use that $5 to buy yourself some candy with a unique font on it, whose wrapper art was probably designed by a graphic designer.
