I came here to say that this was far better than Eden Lake an then I found your post. I first saw Summer Scars and I was actually very impressed with it - the acting, the overall style of directing it and, most of all, it stroke me as realistic with a psychological insight on the characters, something like 'this could really happen".
Too bad for its poor rating compared to Eden Lake, I would go as far as to say that Eden Lake shamelessly stole the plot, setting, and even the start for its overly-inflated social commentary. We have the 'hoods' in summer scars, just that they're real people, not some vehicle for a shocking development of a horror story that's not even in good taste, in my opinion, at least.
I think Summer Scars was more subtle, both in message and plot development, and maybe had more of an indie look - I would guess that's why not many people liked it. If you're looking for instant blood, gore and caricatures of real people (basically what Eden Lake is made of) they're definitely not there.
But i think that it's a movie that seats very well by itself, maybe more similar to art-house cinema than to a specific genre - be it horror, thriller etc.
