Where can you watch this?

I've searched everywhere on the Internet but I can't find it. Help!

reply

It's on Netflix in the UK.

Sadly, I am in the US. But thanks anyway!

You can watch it on Hulu Plus - you can get a free month of "Plus" and then cancel.

Oh, right. So, she secretly trained a flock of sandflies.

You are welcome. Even though I think it is a very poor adaptation I did enjoy it on the first watch. It was only when I rewatched it that it's feet of clay became more and more exposed.

If that is your opinion, then I'm happy for you.

IMO it is not faithful to the novel and omitting a few non essential characters is just not that important. The production values are just what I expect from the BBC and the camerawork could be a lot better. The 'chemistry' between Brandon and Marianne does not belong in the story. It's Jane Austen, not Rosemary Rogers or Shirley Conran. Look them up if you have never heard of them. So for me it is the worst of any adaptation.

While not wanting to get involved in the (seemingly endless!) merry-go-round of arguments on this board, this comment made me smile (and took me back!).

I remember buying Sweet Savage Love by RR when I was still in my teens. It made my hair curl!

I remember having the book, I can't remember what it was about. I remember Shirley Conran because of the TV movie and a review I read about it. The reviewer said he read the book simply to see the steam rising from the pages. I thought that was funny. Well everybody needs to laugh.

In other words, the production values are excellent. IMO, it's interesting to compare newer BBC Austen adaptations to older ones from the 1970s and early 1980s, which really do tend to look cheap (and were mostly shot on videotape). What do you think is wrong with the camerawork in S&S 2008? It seems fine to me.

Well of course the production values are excellent. The BBC has resources and knows how to use them. We are luckiy this side of the pond tat we have so many houses and properties in The National Trust and English & Scottish Heritage. This means that the BBC doesn't have to build sets. We have Angels, the largest and most expert source for costumes in the world. We have a fine tradition of trained actors who can turn their hand to any part. So the production values would have no excuse for being less than top notch. The camera work seems to be a bad mix of Steadi-Cam and the staged efforts you noted about a lot of the 70's productions. Couldn't they have kept the damn thing still for a few minutes. The camera work is as bad as the sound.

The 80's were not that bad, so many great shows were put on at that time. All the Catherine Cookson productions and one show I remember vividly, 'Edge of Darkness' with Joe Don Baker and Bob Peck. What a wonderful series.

Well, first of all, I was referring to the chemistry that the entire S&S 2008 cast exhibits. There are many different types of chemistry, not just romantic chemistry. And besides, would you really have had a problem with the chemistry between Wakefield and Morrissey in S&S 2008 if the ending had been written differently to be more faithful to Jane Austen's novel? It seems to me that the (IMO, very minor) changes to the story are what really bother you.

I don't call the entire gutting of Brandon's and Marianne's characters and story arc minor. Edward is a minor annoyance, but then he is essentially a minor character. Lucy is much more important.

I mostly want to watch it for Dan Stevens... :) But since it's BBC I'll give it a try and see if I like it

reply

He's playing Edward, he's not in it much. Stick to Downton. But 'Downton Abbey' is ITV, not BBC.

Oh, yes. Dan Stevens is very pretty.

There are a few online sites that have it available.

As someone else mentioned Netflix UK (you can certainly get this if you do some research) and of course just renting it.

It was on the Drama Channel this weekend. Probably will be shown again over the Christmas period.

Amazon prime in the US if you have it
