Why didn't he get compensation for the accident?

Something was mentioned about the driver of the car but I couldn't understand what was said. Surely Alan would get some sort of insurance payout?

he didnt get compensation because it was his fault, he just ran out into the road and obviously the driver wouldnt have been able to slow down

Yeh I believe so, and it mentioned that the driver was within the speed limit or something, I have it on cassette but I've no idea how to put it onto computer :(

***SPOILERS!***

Tricia arrives at the hospital to see Alan and meets his workmate Jonathan there:-

Jonathan: "I'm so sorry."

Tricia: "How bad is he?"

J: "I don't know."

T: "You saw how fast the car was going."

J: "Yeah, um, he wasn't speeding."

Later, about half way through the film, when Jonathan comes to see Alan at home to invite him back to work:-

T: "What's happened?"

J: "You're not gonna get any compensation.

T: "What, none?"

J: "None at all. The accident report says that driver was whiter than white."

About putting it onto computer: try copying from your VHS onto DVD-R with a DVD recorder (or a VHS/DVD combi recorder), or direct to your computer if it, like some "media centre" PC's, has suitable video inputs. I have it on mine direct from my Sony Freeview STB (no RGB inputs on my PC sadly, but superb results anyway via 'S-Video' - much better than using a DVD recorder, and anyway can be put on DVD later) I'm watching it now for the first time. I've just paused it and quickly 'slid' back to find the quotes above.

Hey? How come Alan's wife (and Next-of-Kin) Tricia found out from Jonathan the findings of the accident report? Why wasn't she informed first?

Yes, that's a bit odd, I agree.
Maybe it was because Jonathan was acting manager of the company at the time Alan is in hospital, and the accident was being dealt with as a work-related injury by the insurance company, so the details would go to him?
No, feeble reason, I agree. Would ethical Alan claim social expenses [drink with colleague] as a work function / tax deduction? Probably not.
But other than that, I dunno, unless the reason was purely to fit in with the needs of the drama. Maybe somebody on set noticed there was a credibility gap in the script and they had to quickly come up with a reason to explain the way she found about the incident report.

Maybe becuase he was a friend of the family he said, and Tricia allowed him, he would to deal with that side of the accident, what with all the heightened emotional stuff that was happening.

No! I said! Diggity!
