in god of war 2 kratos is apparantly suprised to know that zeus is his father yet in a secret ending of god of war kratos sought out his mother and she died telling him zeus was his father so how come he was suprised? was the ending considered non canon?

How sure are you that they're "What if?".
With that said, the cronos modern day thing could be interesting if sony gave some GoW liberties to a different developer, went out publicly that that company was making a game for them based on GoW, and they came out with a full-on modern-say GoW that circles around global military workings and what-not, and maybe even terrorism. Of course, there still would be a semi-mythical element in it, like the gods and such having an influence on certain military powers all over the globe. pretty goofy, but yeah it'd be interesting.

I'm pretty sure I read that the developers are currently finishing off the story for GOW3 and are very excited about it.
They mentioned that it wil be the last and it will explain why the myths, magic, legends and creatures of greek legend died and no longer exist today.
Could be extremely cool!
