Question about Kit's mother's garden party...SPOILERS

Near the beginning of the movie, Kit's mom is having a "garden party". One of her friends there says that her husband was gone and she was staying at the Netherlands Hotel (I think that's what she said) and she said they would be there until her husband sent for her and their kids. Then later when Kit and her mom were walking in town and they find Grace, her mom sees that same friend coming out of some place that says "Boarding house" and she has a scared and surprised look on her face. I take it she lied to her friends and didn't want to tell them that her husband left her destitute and she was not really living in luxury, like she was trying to say that she was?

I only saw the first half hour twice and I haven't seen the rest of the movie for some time. Do they revisit this woman's circumstance again, or not really? I was just curious, and I really felt for her character when she was busted coming out of the boarding house. She looked so mortified, and like Kit's mom later says, everyone is going through hard times.

To each their own...opinion

That about sums it up. You saw everything. They didn't revisit or mention her character again. My take was the same as yours, she was just putting up appearances, then embarassed at being "discovered".

What do you mean they didn't revisit her character, she moves in with them. She is Stirling's mother played by Glenn Headly. and yes she lied about being as hard off as they were. She had been a wealthy woman and didn't want anyone to know how bad things had gotten. Shortly after Kit's mom sees her, she offers her a room in the house. We know this because we see Stirling and the mom lugging suit cases up the driveway as they move in. is overprotective and gets upset when Stirling goes to the hobo jungle.

*Spoiler alert they show her reaction to getting a letter from the dad, but it turns out Stirling wrote it because he saw her take her ring off and wanted her to hear from the dad. She is in the entire movie including the last dinner scene.

The plot line about Stirling and his mother was so sad!
