Ideas for new American Girl - characters

I am a bit irritated by the fact that you can`t send any suggestions and new ideas to American Girl. I, for instance, think that they should have a romany girl and a muslim girl as a part of their sortiment. No, make it TWO muslim girls, one with and one without a "headscarf". It would also be nice to have another african-american girl, for instance one growing up at the time when the Civil Rights Movement was at its peak..? I also think a hispanic girl whose parents crossed the Rio Grande and so on, should be an American Girl. And how about a new native-american girl?

I wonder myself how they come up with what time periods they will and will not focus on at any given time. For instance, they've got the '30s (Kit), '40's (Molly), and '70s (Julie), but no character for the gaps in between. How come? I'd love to see a girl from the '50s, which is when my parents were born, and the '60s, since it's one of my favorite eras musically.

I am also curious, though, why they began discontinuing dolls? Was Kirsten not selling well anymore so they decided to stop production on her line?

I completely agree that they need '50s and '60s dolls to fill in the gap. I like some of the other suggestions in this thread to. Don't even get me started on the demise of American Girl in general. Now that they are phasing out many of the classic historical dolls (Kirsten? Felicity? Samantha? Noooo!), I'm really getting worried. I wish it was still Pleasant Company.

They don't have dolls or anything along that line, but they did release a book series called Dear America that deals with some of the issues people have raised here - you can find most of them on Amazon (some are being released in Kindle form) - they're in Diary form and cover such events as the Salem Witch Trials, major wars, immigration, slavery and more. They also turned some of the stories into a short TV series also called Dear America, which is available on Netflix.

How about a Muslim Girl of the Year and have the option of making her conservative or not....

I do love the Civil Rights idea for the historical doll.

Maybe an Inuit for Girl of the Year?

I was a little disappointed when they stopped doing so many of the older historical dolls - I always really liked those! For ten years before I had a daughter I pored over the catalogues, reading the back story.

They have Julie, who's sort of a hippie; how about a 50s Girl or an 80s Girl, with Cyndi Lauper hair and DVDs..... or maybe a punk outfit (giggle).

Lizzie Borden, at least as a kid. Not only is she nonfiction (and they could easily write fiction stories for, since some already exist), but it's also an era they haven't really touched a whole lot on.
