what were the people in white doing?

Anyone know what was going on with the people in white suits/coverups in the background the field/woods in the scene after the Rome Conservatory ?. I was quite distracted and still can't work out what they were up to. I'll have to get the DVD and freeze frame, but if anyone has an idea .....!

Lol, I hadn't noticed them... They seem to be doing some kind of extravagant Asian gymnastics.

Tai chi, maybe. That's what I thought, but I was concentrating on the foreground action...

I think that it meant to express the different time periods. It's the 70s, and times are changing, as you can see in the "new age" people. I think that Francesca was kind of into it too, and that's why she asks him to take off his shoes.
