Lack of emotion in the ending (SPOILERS)

A friend of mine pointed out when Manrico Benassi dies Accio Benassi doesn't seem to show much emotion.

I think it is due to the very macho culture he lives in, and his emotion was in his action of letting the residents into the new houses.

The again, when his brother was being shot or when he collapsed on the street, he doesn't look very upset, whilst Manrico's girlfriend is screaming.

In addition, it it she that brought the police to the cafe, or was it by chance?

reply

Just because someone isn't crying doesn't mean they don't have emotion.

The police were listening in to the phone call between Accio and Francesca. That's why she keeps hanging up on him, especially as he mentions the cafe he is due to meet Manrico in. I think she was probably coming to the cafe to warn Manrico the police were on to him.

I think he's in shock, because not only has his brother been killed, he realizes that it's his fault--he inadvertently let the police know where the brother would be.

That must be it. I hate the concept if you're not crying, you're not suffering. Different people react differently to the same events. And that was it. I think.

It's actually very interesting to me that someone else also noted this lack of emotion by Accio when his brother is shot dead in the street by the police. I absolutely agree - this lack of emotion really jarred with me. I found it particularly jarring as the two brothers had just shared a very bonding, quite emotional (albeit macho, yet still emotional) moment with each other in the restaurant...Accio's response just didn't gel with me at all.

Funny how something so very fleeting and seemingly unimportant as that moment can somehow diminish the emotional power of a scene, even the overall impact of a film.

noticed it as well. looked like he was thinking about something else and hardly noticing it.
