Why did they phone the killer's father ?

When they obtained the telephone number of the (suspected) killer's father it seemed stupid to phone and tell him his daughter was wanted in connection with a criminal investigation - thus prompting all that happened afterwards.

Why didn't they just go round there and apprehend her by surprise ?
