Why cinematic release in 2016?

Seeing as the film was made in 2006?

Director Farhadi's work prior to A SEPARATION wasn't well known in the U.S.. Last year, his 2009 film ABOUT ELLY had its belated release (it's an excellent film by the way). Now, we have FIREWORKS.

It's not unusual for a foreign film Director's older work to get discovered once they have a breakthrough such as A SEPARATION.

2013's THE PAST is also superb. Farhadi is the best dramatist working in Cinema today.

Ah, makes sense. Oh Jaysus, I know. One of the best directors alive today. I've seen all four of these films you mentioned. The effortless manner in which he creates such drama and momentum seemingly out of thin air all the way through his films is unique among filmmakers right now as fas as I can see. As Alexander Payne said about A Separation: it's difficult to imagine a film crew being there.

What I find most immersive with Farhadi is the way he creates genuine suspense in what appears to be on the surface - a 'simple' relationship drama. He's downright Hitchcockian in making Ingmar Bergman domestic dramas. Uncanny.

FIREWORKS isn't quite in the league with the later three, but, is certainly worth seeing. In many ways, it plays like a set-up for A SEPARATION. Too bad the digital print that is playing in theaters is pretty mediocre (and, THAT'S being charitable).

Yes, I agree. My fave was About Elly, then A Seperation. I'd put The Past and Fireworks Wednesday on equal footing, almost. His theatre traning shows in his actor's performances; his filmmaking experience since 14 shows in his craft; his reading and watching film shows in his writing. Big inspiration for me.
