What does Region 2 maintain?

Hello,

I just wanted to ask anyone who has seen the region 1 dvd (and recognized that there have been cuts) could tell me what's been maintained in region 2? Of course, this means that you will have seen both versions:)

It's only 7 minutes more time, from what I can gather, but I wanted to know if it is worth the money to avoid region 1? Anyway, any insight into this dvd difference would be great...

Thanks in advance,

Garvice2003

P.S. I know that there are other threads about what's been cut, but again I'm more interested in Region 2.
Besides the interesting dvd cover, what happens?

Is there a nude scene in the region 1 release? I know that was in the region 2 version and I was not amused. It's just so out of character.

No, there isn't a nude scene in the Region 1 release. I'm not sure how I feel about that...

There is NO frontal nudity. Catherine is depicted in the bath, from the back, above the waist.

RandomMovies2002,

Well, that's a relief. At least, it is to some degree. It's somewhat surprising because Jane Austen (and the time period) was about restraint/ restriction. I'm not saying that I believe people weren't active, but there's more tension because there was more risk involved. Especially for women. This is my 2 cents, anyway.

Do you feel that way about showing Darcy in the bath in P&P 1995?

reply

1,000% gratuitous.

Yes, people back then took baths, but if it's an Andrew Davies script, it's all about gratuitous titillation. That scene did zippo to advance the plot.

I disagree, Julie-30. I thought this sequence quite funny and nicely naive due to the fantasy Tilney's behavior. As a guy facing Felicity Jones rising like a Venus from her tub, well... let's just say that she still had a lot to learn about sensuality in the real world :).

Here's a list of scenes.

I wouldn't own the region 1. I love the apple-picking scene!

It seems that the region 1 dvd is missing quite a bit. I wonder if Masterpiece Theater/Classic cuts questionable content as well as content for time. It's a pain though....I'd like to get the whole film without cuts.

Thanks for the Link,

Movies for which the BBC own the DVD rights are released uncut. This includes S&S08 and P07. But movies for which PBS/WGBH own the DVD rights are identical to what is shown on PBS. This includes NA07 and MP07.

Julie-30,

Yeah, I noticed that when I purchased Emma 2009. It's too bad that PBS/WGBH continues to release this way. Don't get me started on Mansfield Park '07. I just wasn't into it. I still have mixed feelings about Persuasion '07.

What did you think of Sense and Sensibility '08?

I don't like MP07. I don't like NA07. I despise P07. But I really do love S&S08.

Julie-30,

I'd have to agree on MP 07 and that's a strong word for P07. I want to like it, which is strange to me.

This is just my opinion, but I think many viewers might like it more...If the actors had really been able to pull off that kissing scene. They broke some major social standards by having Anne run all over the place. Then, on top of that, they had the world's most awkward kiss. So, it was a bit like a double-negative in the last ten minutes. Unlike the film North and South, which had a very public kissing scene...Yet, the kiss seem to bring audience members back...

I'm not sure about miscasting. I'm just not sure the staring-at-camera-perspective worked for me. It made Anne seem weak rather than quietly strong. It also seemed to copy the film adaptation of Mansfield Park...

Northanger Abbey is the only Austen book I haven't read. So, I'll need to read it to make any final judgements. Man, I wonder if they will try to remake these again? I would hate to see worse. I have to agree Sense and Sensibility was the best of the four. Although, I did miss Hugh Laurie as Mr. Palmer!

I guess we could almost say 5 adaptations since the BBC remade Emma as well.

Yes, I despise P07 and no, the guppy kiss had very little to do with it.

I particularly hated how they moved the constancy conversation to the middle of the story, had it take place in Lyme and had it be between Anne and Benwick. It ruins the entire story. There's now no need for Wentworth's beautiful letter.

Then there's that stupid running. It's ridiculous. And how Harville knew who Anne was. Frederick's own sister didn't know who Anne was. And how Anne knows how to fix a collarbone. Please.

As for Mr. Palmer, he's barely in the book, so I really don't care who plays him. He's just another minor character whom Emma Thompson brought to prominence. Not unlike Margaret, who barely appears in the book and who ET turns into this little proto-feminist. But she didn't have time to give us the Willoughby-at-Cleveland scene that is vital to the story. Once again: please.

I have to re-watch all of them too. It's my Project for the Year. I still love S&S95 as a movie, but not as an adaptation.
