My first favorite book, after P&P, is probably Northanger Abbey. I like Katherine and Henry. Plus I kind of understand the whole taking a book and dreaming about it to much (not that I ever thought someones dad killed their mom). My next favorite would most likely be either Mansfield Park because it is Jane Austen's edgiest book and I really like Fanny or Sense and Sensibility just because I like the interplay between the sisters.

For me, Northanger Abbey is my favorite Jane Austen book, because i can relate to Cathrine in so many ways. I guess I don't have much to go off of because i have not yet read all of her books. I tried reading Pride and Prejudice when i was younger but found it to be above my reading capability's at the time. I am currently reading Emma, and so far I am enjoying it very much.

reply

No, Pride & Prejudice is not my favourite Austen book. :P

My first 2 favourites are
Emma - I find this novel the most enjoyable to read of all Austen novels and I love Emma. Such an enjoyable character to read. Mr.Knightley also make a good hero. There are also many supporting characters I like. Lastly, I find the plot, overall, well constructed.
Northanger Abbey - I find the story really funny and I love how Austen satirized the romance novel cliche of her time. Plus, it has my favourite Austen hero, Henry Tilney. :D

Actually, Pride & Prejudice is my 3rd favourite. It could have been higher if not for the heroine. I really don't like Elizabeth Bennet that much.

Wow, I really find 'Northanger Abbey' as her worst novel, although movie was quite alright (7/10). Cathy Morland is the most irritating heroines of all. She is naive, stupid and gets easily excited by such mediocre books like these of Ann Radcliffe's authorship. Oh and I really feel much pitty for Henry Tillney - he wouldn't marry Cathy if it was not in the name of honour.
I think that right after 'Pride and Prejudice' I would put 'Sense and sensibility' and then maybe 'Mansfield Park'.

reply

Next to P&P, my fav is "Persuasion". I like that it's all about hope and second chances.

reply

I adore Pride and Prejudice and in my opinion it rules them all!
But my next favourite is probably Emma, although I like them all in different ways. They all have so many delightful qualities and it depends on the kind of mood you're in. I love Northanger Abbey and I think it is a good laugh as well as being a sweet romance and a clever parody. Henry and Catherine are SOOO cute!

reply

Well so far I have only read pride and prejudice and let me tell you, I love that book and movie and I'm afraid all her other books and movies, won't be as good as that one.

But I'm gonna give a chance to this book, as soon as I finish reading "platero and me" I think I'll begin with this one.

reply

I think Emma is better than Pride & Prejudice. You should try out Emma one day.

reply

Oh, Northanger Abbey is my favorite. Not many people like it because of the split setting storyline and how young and naive Catherine is.
But I am Catherine Morland through and through! I read too much and make up fantasies daily.
You also have to understand that it is a parody/satire and that Jane is sort of portraying how she feels about the gothic novels and how they had such a reputation.

reply

Persuasion has always been my favourite book. I love the idea of both of them wondering if the other still loves them and the second chance at it. Also, you know that they both still care for each other and the anticipation of them getting back together is great! Emma is probably my second and then P& P is tied with S & S. I just wish in all the books you can also read it from the hero's point of view!!

reply

Firstly I love P& P, but just recently watched Northanger Abbey and now that's my second favourite. I'm pretty much a newbie to Austen series, but has always known P&P.

reply

Have you read any of the books? They're even better than the series.

reply

I've only ever read P&P, but do you think I should read Northanger Abbey? Since I loved the screen adaptation, I want to know if it's worth the read.

reply

NA the adaptation is not like the book. There are no nude scenes, Catherine doesn't have orgasms in her dreams, she reads a book that is more suited to a young girl than is The Monk, and Isabella does not sleep with Captain Tilney. Oh, and the book actually takes place in Bath. The series is filmed in Dublin.

Henry is wittier in the book. John Thorpe is less appealing.

Read the book. Books are usually better than adaptations. Dianekistler says that "Last of the Mohicans" is an exception to this rule, and I'll say that "Flambards" is.

...do you think I should read Northanger Abbey ? Since I loved the screen adaptation, I want to know if it's worth the read.

Every word Jane Austen wrote is worth reading, especially Emma and Persuasion.

You should learn to think for yourself.

I'm sorry the Coen brothers don't direct the porn I watch. They're hard to get ahold of, okay?

Well, after Pride & Prejudice, I would have to say Persuasion is my favorite. I like this book because it shows you the strength of true love and what it can withstand. Going up against odds of being persuaded not to marry the man you love, and pride of being refused by the woman you love, it shows that where true love is, time doesn't change love's strength. After Persuasian, I enjoy the most Sense & Sensibility. The fact that they are forced into a terrible situation and try to make the most of it, really endears me to this novel. I find true heroism in Elinor. She has to hide her feelings and love for propriety sake and she really feels more like the mom in that family. She takes on the responsibility for everyone's happiness and tries so hard to keep her own feelings in-check. I think I would love to have a sister like Elinore and sometimes, I feel I am Elinor. :)

My handy dandy list:

Pride & Prejudice
Persuasion
Sense & Sensibility
Emma
Mansfield Park
Northanger Abbey

reply

I wasn't too fond of P&P - I think I had seen the movies WAY too many times and so the book seemed very boring to me. I am almost finished with Northanger Abbey and I think it is hilarious! Cathy's complete naivety is just so funny to me and how everyone just thinks she's being clever or coy or something but she really just has no idea what's going on. I love it. And Mrs. Allen's obsession with clothes! I really wish they would have played that up more in the movie. I really am shocked because I never thought this novel would be so good - I put off reading it because everyone seemed so ho hum about it. But I think it is my second favorite! I also think it is the funniest of all Austen's novels (although I haven't read Mansfield Park, yet).

My favorite, though, is Sense and Sensibility because I love Elinor. She is my favorite Jane Austen heroine and I was constantly amazed by her. Her selflessness and allover maturity really were inspiring! And in the end she got everything she wanted even though she was willing to sacrifice her happiness for everyone else's. I also really enjoyed Persuasion for all the reasons others have named. Emma was just okay for me -- I think also because I have seen the movies too many times. I have yet to read Mansfield Park, but it is next on my list. So here is my list:

Sense and Sensibility
Northanger Abbey & Persuasion (tie)
P&P & Emma (tie)
haven't read Mansfield Park

But I really do like them all!

reply

Persuasion is my favortie with Pride and Prejudice as a close follow-up. I adore Anne. And, as someone else has mentioned, it is hopeful, uplifting, and shows how strong and enduring love can be.
Pride and Prejudice is so widely known, and I think that is the real reason for its popularity - it is usually the first Austen book to come to people's attention and hence the first (and often only) one they read. I've noticed that among true Austenites the other books are as often chosen as favorite as P&P.
