Was Denise Richards asked back for this?

It seems obvious that Lola's character could easily have originally been Carmen's.

She probably wanted more money than a low budget could have paid her.

OR

She turned down the role.

Before they were casting they said they wanted to get a number of actors from the 1st film in it but probably could only get Casper Van Dien.

I'm Sure Jonny would not have been as happy with joining the army for carman to get dumped and have her marry his superior instead whilst hes sat out fighting hordes of bugs haha.

reply

Daniel I dont know Denise Richards as actress and I dont know if she is more or less talented, however an actress must go forward and not backward: SciFi doesnt help her own career, look at Jolene blalock !I hate good actresses which end in Z-movies!

reply

Denise Richards is screaming for roles according to many tabloid magazines. She has even gotten her breasts enlarged to improve her chances of getting parts.

I wonder maybe Casper didn't want her to come back?

I'm a Republican, and thats my opinion on this matter.

reply

... and Denise did well, she is not a clown as Jolene...

reply

well, only z-grade actors like Casper and Blalock needed some fast cash...not that Richards is a better actress but richer and bigger celebrity...this is a z-grade straight to dvd ...just look at the low production...

reply

I agree with the troll here, I reckon she turned it down because of money, shes been pretty big since the first starship and is probably wanting a bigger check than the budget can allocate. She was pretty much noone in the first movie, she probably thinks shes above low budge sci/fi now. I think casper is in it because it doesnt seem like hes been too succesful since the first one and perhaps needs the money.

For the record if i was a famous actor, Id still do sci/fi even if i was hugely succesful, but then again that could be because im a nerd. :P

Some people just like there character, i mean Rico is a classic now, and the biggest mistake in the second movie was him being absent. Carmen Ibanez was an important character but not as much as Rico, and the other ones who survived the first movie where not that important, we could do without them. But Rico is mandatory, thats how i see it. And anyway lot of stuff can happen in 8 years, remember Rico say it took him 8 years to become Colonel, counting the number of peoples who died in the first one only, its more than possible that the other surviving characters died since that.

reply

11 years actually.

Well yes casper hasn't had a successful career (people say hes a bad actor. I tend to disagree. Hes not the best but not the worst)

Seeing some others from the 1st film in the next would be cool though; just one big problem that is most other characters were killed off in the first film! haha.

Well Jake Busely should come back in a cameo role in the next movie perhaps?

Well i would say there is trillions of people in the Federation as it covers lots of the galaxy (as shown ((kind of)) by the clip in the first movie where it shows earth at one age of the Galaxy and then the bug planet at the other end) so them meeting up again would be unlikely, one of the main characters themself said that themself said that in the first film.

I personally want more Rico in the next film ie him training troopers in marauders use or something similar. Seeing Carmen or one of the others would be a good treat to the next film though.

I've just watched this, and for me the biggest "flaw" is that while Rico is in it (even if it's more of a "cameo" in many ways), he gets a whole new backstory and we get two main characters who could easily have been Carl (Dix) and Carmen (Beck).

Maybe it's just me, but it seems pretty much like that was the way the script was originally written... Carl is now aide to the SM, and his "rivalry" with Rico develops as a result of his unexpected 'romance' with Carmen (that's the one thing that might be a "stretch", but I quite like the idea, and Carmen wasn't exactly loyal to her men, after all!). Dix's fight in the bar seemed written for Carl, as does his blatant photo on his desk (but with Rico instead of the SM... boy, they REALLY love their boss, eh?).

I personally would have been fine with recasting the roles if it meant giving us more attachment to what instead are two brand new characters, yet we are supposed to accept them as great old friends and comrades of Rico.

So I think it was written to "reunite" Carmen, Johnny and Carl, but when the others refused/couldn't return, they characters were changed (I'd maybe even suggest Dix's surname was a bit of a joke on that... :) ).

Then again, as much as I thought ST2 sucked, I would have enjoyed it 100 times more had it starred Sgt. Zim instead of ANOTHER new character... :(

And yeah, what's up with Ace Levy not coming back at ALL? Jake can't be THAT expensive, surely? I wonder even if he was supposed to be the guy who jumps on the bug-bomb 1/4 way into the movie?! Maybe I'm just reaching now, though!

Just been watching SST3:M with the cast commentry and Carmen was origionally mean't to be in the film though only as a cameo during the Fleet advert on fednet, she was mean't to talk about how fleet has taken her to the top instead of Phid but Denise Richards was to busy with other commitments at the time.

Rico is a charismatic war hero and colonel. It's not like he can only same dedicated friends he had in highschool or his early military days. In 11 years I am sure he has forged many strong relationships and been in many interesting situations. I was fine with the new characters.

It's been a few years since I saw the original ST and went into this one and thought "Oh that's the hot big-lipped character." Then thought, "Is that the same actress? She looks familiar." but that was about it.

Didn't even realise they'd called her a different name. Did any of that really matter? I was paying more attention to the action/satire/fighting as that's what the films are all about not subtle character drama.

Also yeah Denise Richards probably counts herself as a Theatrical actress. Jolene Blalock is a TV actress. This is essentially a TV/STV movie and as such it's still punching well above it's weight. Can't compete with the theatrical original of course because that was the original and theatrical. Any tiny theatrical release this got would just be to get it into certain stores that won't stock films that didn't have a theatrical release.

That's too bad. It would have been so great to have Richards and NPH back in this one. It was better than the 2nd.. but I feel there was just too much unneeded dialog, the religion aspect was too in-your-face.

Another thing that bothered me about 2 and 3 is the CGI of the bugs look horrible compared to the first movie. Maybe they used more real props for them in the first? I dunno, I just wish they looked consistent.

Not seen the film for a few years but heard that there was a cameo spot for Denise Richards on the tv when there is an advert playing?

A slight rewrite, both Denise Richards and Neil Patrick Harris could've returned. But would Omar Anoke have been Carl Jenkins? I wouldn't want Jenkins to be brainwashed and then killed off like Omar, unless maybe he came to his senses and either lived or sacrificed himself to save the others.

Lola could've easily had been Carmen Ibanez.

Denise Richards was pretty good in the first movie. It is an astonishment how quickly her acting career pretty much stopped after she got married and had children.

I'm guessing from the media coverage on her that she is not interested in pursuing her acting career any further.

i dunno-she seemed to be used to getting by on her looks-all she did was look pretty and SMILE like goon all the time-

she ended up doing a show or 2 of Two and a half Men

reply

NO. The Producers couldn't figure out a way to wipe that stupid grin off her face. Plastic surgery would have cost more than simply adding another actress to fill a similar part...

reply

The characters are clearly analogous, but I don't think that this film, with its budget, could have afforded even Denise Richards.
