Something I don't understand...

WARNING: This board contains SPOILERS of the game, so if you haven't beaten it and don't want anything ruined, then don't continue. You've been warned...

I've beaten the game and paid close attention to the storyline and maybe I need to run through it again like I did with MGS2 when I got confused with that game, but I'm confused as to what Big Boss' tragedy was. I mean, wasn't the tragedy in MGS3 when he killed the Boss? Or is it what he found out about the Boss in MPO, or the death of Jonathan, the death of Ursula, what exactly was it because I can't come up with the conclusion.

And wasn't Sokolov dead? They didn't explain is comeback too well. How could he have survived that beating?

The games first recruit, Jonathan, at first I thought it was Johnny from MGS1 & 2, but then he dies at the end of the game, so now my theory is that it might be the Johnny from MGS3. He is old enough, his son might still be in his early teens, if that, and there's the possibility that he could've been stationed in South America. I don't know much about the Sasaski's, so it might not be him. I mean, throughout the whole game, he doesn't rush to the bathroom because of his Diarrhea.

I don't know. Could somebody help me out with these.

Well Big Boss's tragedy isn't complete in this game. In MGS3, it shows Snake's disgust with how a soldier's life is treated by the government. In this game, it showed the same thing as MGS3 but it shows someone else's attempt at creating the perfect world for soldiers.

His entire tragedy is his evolution into creating Outer Heaven and becoming a "terrorist."

reply

Is someone creating a world for certain people really considered a "terrorist?" I don't recall, but during the Outer Heaven and Zanzibar incidents, was Big Boss threatening to use the Metal Gear models for a nuclear attack?

The script is extremely vague in 'Metal Gear' - barely any characterisation or fleshed-out story at all. 'Metal Gear 2' was a marked improvement, but still suffered from vague representations. Big Boss's motives aren't entirely convincing and are not given a good treatment in the storyline. He still doesn't tell Solid Snake that he is his "father" - even in the revised "Subsistence" version.

That is why I think they should remake Metal Gear 1 and 2.

Or written as a novel.

reply

Well, Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 were written nearly a decade before Metal Gear Solid came out...

And I doubt they actually planned that Big Boss would be anything more then just a "terrorist" even while working on Metal Gear Solid 2...

Hell, wasn't the name "Big Boss" itself a play on the fact that he was the "Big Boss" battle of the original Metal Gear?

So you really just got to wait until they either release more in the portable ops series or do something like the previous poster suggested with the novel...or just fill in the gaps yourself.

reply

Yeah, it's kinda fun guessing what's really meant in the series and filling in story holes ourselves, but it's also nerveracking. It would be good if they made things official by doing something with the first two games, even if they remake them for the PSP.

Did you guys hear about them making a sequel to Portable Ops. They said that if it did well on the market, than they'd have a sequel out by the end of this year, I think. I think I remember reading that Portable Ops sold in the #1 spot for the PSP in America and Japan. Has anyone read anything about any of this?

Yeah, on wikipedia.

They are when the world they are creating is one of perpetual war and conflict.

reply

Well I believe the story tied alot of loose ends. It showed how Big Boss went into his coma, which was when his DNA was extracted, it also showed him where he belonged-commanding an entire army rather than just being by himself.

Yes!

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer will be the (positive) surprise of 2007.

Well, hopefully all will be explained in the the sequel to Portable ops in the Big Boss saga of metal gear. But right now, I want all questions about the Patriots answered in MGS4.

If they do end up making a Portable Ops sequel, then I would really LOVE TO SEE Big Boss finally snap and see his complete actions that lead up to his creation of Outer Heaven. Gene spoke of Army's Heaven, which let Big Boss to get a first glimpse of his future sanctuary, but I really want to see the words "Outer Heaven" come out of Big Boss's mouth in the sequel!!!!

I'll quit when I am dead!!!

reply

Haha, yeah. I loved it when
*Spoilers I guess*
.

.
Gene says that what he is doing is building a heaven for all soldiers to live in or something alogn the lines of that. And Big Boss replies by saying "What soldiers really need is some place outside of your heaven!" I got shivers when he said that...and when the psychic girl says "You're son will save the world, your son will destroy the world" or whatever exactly she says. I loved that

reply

Oh F uck yeah....my favorite scene from the games...forshadowing the future in every way...I loved the way that it showed all of the sons of big boss and then it finally shows an aged big boss at the end...awesome scene.

Major Zero?
Didn't play Portable Ops,soI don't really understand...lol
And btw,in Metal Gear 2,some of the people in Zanzibar Land said that Big Boss is a "wonderful man".So,even then,it wasn't all black and white.

reply

I too refuse to believe that Major Zero is the one responsible, but at the same time, he is the only one to have the same code name as Null. I guess we will all have to wait for the sequel.

But Yeah, snake eater and portable ops completly changed the way I look at Big Boss. And I'm pretty damn shure we will side with Big Boss even more in the sequel. I'd like to see Big Boss just "snap" in the sequel!!

Damn I love the Metal Gear series...the plot lines for all these games are insanely terrific....hats off to Mr. Kojima
