Was the film rather faithful to the book?

I wonder if the film was rather faithful to the book since the town was named Chew and Swallow just like the book but I think the characters didn't have any names and was told more like a bed time story to a couple of youngsters.

Had this book as a little kid (back in '78 when it first came out) and this film is NOTHING like the book. I believe the film would've been better if it did stick to the original story.
