why didn't Oliver Twist just take cracked head guy down?

Seems like a simple rule: Never follow the advice of guys with gaping head wounds. If only Oliver Twist had either forced cracked head guy to abandon the climb or simply ditched him, then that guy who fell off the mountain, the dude who croaked at the end of the rope and Ollie himself, would've lived.
