78 Cadillac controversial choice

Why does Bloom say "78 Cadi a controversial choice?" What's so controversial about 78 Cadillac?

Sitting here watching movie wondering same thing.

Not sure it really meant anything other than being a quirky line?

I think this is a reference to 'The Last Waltz' which was released in 1978. The brothers are starting thier last con (last dance). In 'The Last Waltz' the band goes out with a bang.

I was curious too. A google search reveals a porn movie "Cadillac Named Desire" made in 1978. lol.

I understand. Thank you for telling me. -The masked bandit

I don't know why he calls it a 1978 as it's an '83.

The "controversial choice" has to do with the reception the car's design received in its day.
In 1980 the Caddy Seville went to front wheel drive and a shortened wheel base in an attempt to compete with European sport-luxury cars. Since it had to be long in the front to accommodate the engine/drive line layout of the Toronado, it was necessary to cut length at the rear. To do this they gave it the strange hump-back trunk.

So, to controversy:

Front wheel drive.
Hump-back trunk.
Strange, "full Cabriolet" roof treatment to give it a fake convertible look.
Additionally, it may well have been one of the poorly received diesel models.

The car demanded apologetic support or abject derision from the Cadillac loyal. Outside of Cadillac kool-aide drinkers, it was roundly loathed.
