What was the point of the beginning where she got threatened as a girl?

Ok, so I put the movie on because there was nothing else on TV to watch. So far the movie is like 1 hr in but its really crappy and boring and I dont think Im gonna keep watching but...

I just wanted to know of there was any point to the beginning where the man grabbed and harassed her? Was its only point to have a reason why she never visits her home town anymore? Or does it actually serve some other purpose?
