Irresponsible

The cartoons were cute, the jokes were funny, and his love for the dog was endearing but essentially what he did was take a dog that was unwanted and produce 7 more unwanted dogs. His lack of insight after spending that much time trying to get her pregnant without considering the puppies is astounding and irresponsible.
Getting a dog spade or neutered doesn't take anything away from them - especially if you're going to take the puppies away anyway.

It's a story, not an advocacy piece.

I know what you mean wiwfdownriver. I've had dogs off and on my whole life. J.R. Ackerley, the old man, did a lot of bone headed moves. But it makes sense if Tulip was his first ever dog.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

You forget that this book on which the movie was made was written early in the 20th century.
AND most importantly. It is a MOVIE.

He does have a point though douche-bag, and that reply wasn't nearly as smart as you thought it was.

And you, it seems, are so intellectually bereft that you do not understand an ironic statement.

reply

Not all characters in film are responsible. I have not seen the film, but from what I understand I do not think it was advocating this behavior.

"Getting a dog spade or neutered..."

If you're going to judge a creative work negatively because it goes against your beliefs, then I think it only fair to judge your message negatively because it goes against standard English usage. The correct term for removing the ovaries from a female animal is "spay." Past tense is "spayed."

reply

The character may be irresponsible, but the film is not. As others have said, the film is not recommending or condoning the protagonist's behaviour.

A wonderful little gem. The relationship between man and dog rang true. The animation was delightful, and Plummer's narration was top-notch. While it took me by surprise that the man had apparently given no thought whatsoever to the aftermath of Tulip's pregnancy, the work as a whole was outstanding.

Although I agree that it made no sense that he would try SO hard to have his dog mate, it seemed he had zero thoughts as to what he would do with the puppies afterward? How can you fail to think about that? And I too was annoyed with him.

However, what I ended up liking about hte film was he realized in teh very end what a selfish mistake he made. I saw it as advocating spay/neutering.

(this may never be answered) Was he going to drown the puppies? He used a bucket of water to clean up Tulips mess instead..

He goes through all that trouble to get her pregnant to have puppies, and then he wants to drown them. I would have like to drown him at that point lol

But that was what happened in this true story. I, for one, got some insight by watching the extra on the DVD titled "Making Tulip".

yeah, I was scratching my head too.. sad about what happened to the puppies though.. might be more humane to kill them than cast them off to who knows what..
