Why is this film called "Retribution" in the US?
IMDB says it is is the literal translation, however, 'sakebi' translates as 'scream' in English.
The whole movie suffered from from poor translations. It was a much better movie (and made more sense) in Japanese.

Wow. Seriously? That's MUCH better. I think "Scream" sums up the movie much better that "Retribution." I guess Hollywood couldn't handle another movie called Scream. Stupid Hollywood.
shareDouble-checked my old Kenkyusha's. Sakebi can only mean scream. The film's final image suggests an allusion.
Edvard Munch supposedly said about his painting The Scream (famous one in multiple authentic versions recently stolen and recovered), that it's not the character in the painting who's screaming: the entirety world around him is screaming. His hands are on his ears and his mouth agape because he can't bear the world's scream.
If the painting is called Sakebi in Japanese art lit, then surely it was somewhere in Kurosawa's conscious or unconscious when he conceived and titled his film.

Coming late to the party here, but I just saw the movie today and, while I speak no Japanese beyond "Ohio" and "Sayonara", I was appalled and turned off by the hideous translation. "It is a rare occurence for you to visit me here at my place of work." How about "What are you doing here? You NEVER want to visit me at work." Or anything beyond the ugly,plodding un-melodious translation they had here.
As for the title, yeah, "scream" makes a lot more sense.
They don't teach anything at University. I had to recognize ducksh*t for brains by myself.
So it means Scream? Now I know why they called it Retribution! Otherwise many people may think is a japanese version of Wes Craven's film of the same name.
BTW I am agree with the user who mentioned how lame are the subs, However I prefer bad subs over dubbings anytime.

Yeah this was especially bad because of the fact that it's a Kurosawa movie. The titles basically sums up the movie and the point of the movie. The main thing the ghost did (and *spoiler* his girlfriend at the end of the movie did) was scream. Also EVERY movie brought to america that gets subs has some bad translations in it, but it varries from movie to movie. I indeed have see a movie were someone just went, "hmph" and they transtaled it *beep* you" or "s***" believe it or not. This is why I'm glad I have somewhat of a grasp of spoken Japanese, so I can get both the little mistakes and sometimes crucial ones that were simply translated the way the dumb translators want it translated. If I could have my way, I would have fan subbers of dramas and anime sub movies because they do a good job of mostly literal translations and putting up notes so you catch refrences and jokes etc...
shareThere was nothing wrong with the translation, though granted this post is 4 years late so I might have seen a better reproduction.
As for the title, if you have to even ask why it was not called "Scream" it just goes to show you are either
a) too ignorant to know there is an entire very popular series by the same name already, or
b) too arrogant to consider this fact over showing off your "knowledge" (congratulations on being able to use a dictionary)
I will not rule out the possibility of both.
