Question on the salt water

I recently saw this and I was wondering if anyone out there knows if the salt water part of the murderes had any significance (I know they pointed it out as if it's important), but I'm specifically wondering if using salt water is from a legend of some kind or is something superstitious? I could be way off but it seemed like I heard something about drowning in salt water was... something which is what I wanted to know.
