'Uncle Tommy'

I'm surprised there's no specific thread on this, although I've seen it asked a few times.

Was Uncle Tommy really Alex's dad's boyfriend?

And don't even think about being a homophobe, thanks. :]

reply

I think it was implied.

All I can think about are dudes.

reply

I did not think of that.......

reply

i thought he was uncle tommy, as in uncle.

to think he was gay is honestly thoughtless. cause why would a 16 year old kid call his dads b/f uncle? The parents were 'going through' a divorce, not been divorced long enough for Alex to not know his 'uncle' is daddy's lover.

I think, and im not saying its not absolutely warranted, people think that because of Van Sant himself being gay. or that his movies have dealt with homosexuality before... but i never once thought uncle tommy was more than an uncle.

now jared... jared was gay. and probably alex too. according to reports i've read, and just general Choices van sant made in filming

reply

Alex doesn't look to be gay. He's interested in girls, just not so much in is futile girlfriend. He goes to Paranoid Park "to skate and watch the girls".

Jared says in the film "get laid with (...) is better than not getting at all" but he stares at Alex ...twice! Why so? I bet on this one.

reply

Well I did base it off of Van Sant being gay, and at first I thought it was only his uncle, but the boards made me think differently.

I didn't notice Jared at all, although he did have a sort of gay voice, haha. But when I look at the details, it did seem that he was.

reply

Uncle Tommy was clearly a boyfriend, and its been written about extensively by certain critics.

reply

i missed that.. actually Jared seemed to be gay to me..

reply

ok well uncle tommy's beach house is registred to Tremain doesn't that imply he would be the kid's uncle?

reply

Wrong. Wrong.

The house number is listed as Tremaine (Alex's last name) meaning it was his dad;s brother. Also early in the film his mom says, your dad is going to stay with his brother.
