Shower scene

Were the bizarre bird calls during this scene a sort of homage to the shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock's Pyscho? I know that would be a really obscure reference, but I was watching this movie for the second time, nearly a year after my original viewing of the film, and I just kind of thought about how oddly out of place those noises were in that scene. And I know that Van Sant directed a remake of Psycho in the 90's, so the idea dawned on me.

The scene can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Co_PvY4TNf0&feature=related

Also if you watch the scene again, from about 1:40 to 1:56, the actor's head is sliding down the wall with his hair sort of parting againist it (I'm not sure how else to describe it) similar to Janet Leigh's in the Psycho shower scene.

I thought of the shower scene in Psycho also (and of Van San's failed remake of that classic). You notice that the wallpaper above the tile in the shower has birds on it?

Yes, I do know that you point that out. I truly do think that this is a sort of nod to Hitchcock, as obscure as it may seem.
