I'm a little confused on the ending?!

Macy suggests for him to write everything down. Even if you don't show it to anyone, you can burn it or keep it. Well... the letters are seperated from the notebook you can tell because he keeps putting them back in there. Although I saw him ripping out a page, maybe he was writing them in the notebook and then ripping them out to burn later. I'm just confused as to if he wrote them singularly and then re wrote them in the notebook, and burned the single letters. Ahh so confusing?!?!?
