Loses its focus fast

I just came off watching Gerry/Elephant/Last Days recently, so I was still in the right mindframe for this type of movie. While I definitely enjoyed it a lot more (there was an actual throughline to follow), I found that it lost its focus pretty quickly. I just didn't understand the main character's motivations for anything. He seemed like a lost little kid for most of the time, with no other passion or ambition than riding skateboard (was that the point?). While I do admire this movie for employing real people instead of actors (bad acting is a lot more true to the way people interact in real life), I just thought the whole thing lacked some resolution. It reminded me a lot more of Elephant, but with a more competent and easier-to-follow chronology to it.

I haven't read any other posts on the topic, but it seems like a lot of people are alluding to this being a gay allegory? That seems too easy. Even though it pissed me off that he was so unconcerned with having sex with a BEAUTIFUL girl, I just assumed that it was his guilt that was gnawing away at him. I don't know, though. It doesn't seem like it's about that at all, but maybe it's my refusal to look any deeper into it than I have to.

By the way, the security guard is an idiot for chasing the boys. Who does that? Seriously, hitting someone on a train with your flashlight? I feel bad for what happens to the guy, but hey, that's what you get for taking your job too seriously and getting involved. (I used to be in security...I know what I'm saying.)

Completely agree. I like Gus Van Sant's work and his style (sometimes), and it just lost me at a point, where I didn't care about any of these characters or what happened to them
