I rooted for Portman at the time, but after having rewatched this wonderful film the other day, I actually think Bening deserved the golden statuette more. She says more with one expression in that dinner scene than Portman does with her entire performance.

I assume you are referring to Portman in Black Swan. While I haven't seen that film yet, Bening was excellent in this role...even though her character was quite unlikeable to me. That dinner scene was powerful! I'm with you on that one.
Benning was close to perfection in this movie but Portman was perfection. Sorry, but I do not agree. Benning was a strong runner up though!
sharePerhaps not quite as strong as Portman, when you consider the physical aspects and such. But Bening was definitely runner up. Moore should've also been nominated.
