test run?

in a few of the challenges, i haven't seen recent ones but the older ones, a lot of the challengers mention how hot it is and how it's messing up their cakes. or how they didn't think it would be that heavy, it doesn't fit together right, they didn't plan on whatever.. I don't understand why they wouldn't do a test run before hand. yes, thats time consuming and costly, but seeing as how the winning gets $10,000 isn't that worth it to make sure your plan works and to be more prepared?

In ones where they know first hand what the challenge will be they most likely do do a run through. A few times I've heard the competitors say "in run throughs before we can build the cake in so and so hours."

Also the heat thing is something they cannot change. The studio, what with all the lights, and plenty of people adding body heat into the room, which would be a lot harder to cool down than a smaller room WILL have havoc on how things work.

And they also free hand most of it, even if they did do a test run at home they wont be able recreate the cake exactly.

And after working 8 straight hours with no or little breaks in a hot room, using your hands for tedious, and sometimes tough work the cake WILL feel heavier than if you were allowed to recover before moving it.

And really in the end you can never get every detail to go exactly as you want every time. Sometimes things break and things can just ruthlessly not cooperate no matter how experienced with it you can be.

And this is all going with the assumption that they know exactly what the day will entail. It seems more and more there are surprises thrown in like mystery clients.
