I didn't really get this...(Spoilers)

Just the ending, it was so bizarre.

1) Why did Mariko offer for her and her Mother (who vanished anyway) to stay there?

2) Why were all those girls killed in the first place? I figured that the ghost of the daughter was doing what her mother insturcted her to do, because somehow she knew they had left their mothers and for some reason this angerd her (Massive hypercrite, she left home at some point too!) But where was the mother? She said that her mother did the killings at first right? So where was she?

3) The Ghost of Mariko's sister, she caught Mariko's hand when she was going to fall, smiled, and then let her go! Or was that actualy the evil ghost pretending to be her? I figured it was because right after you saw the ghost of the daughter again, but then it changed to the little girl and mother from 1302!

4) What was the connection with the little girl and her mother in apartment 1302? lol.

5) And what was the deal with Mariko's mother? She goes nuts suddenly, appears at the apartment and then just vanishes, what was the purpose of that?

Just the entire ending was massively confusing! I felt like it didn't give any reasons at all, although it tried, but it just seemed to raise more questions.

It didn't help that the subtitled version I saw on Crunchyroll was really bad.

1.) She thought that if she offered to stay there with her mother, she'd get the ghosts sympathy, because she obviously had an unhealthy loyalty to her own mother, brought on by guilt. And probably also that if she could stay there with her mother, it'd prevent other girls moving in there and ending up dead.

2.) The ghost was delusional even before she died, still imagining her mother was alive. Even as a ghost she tried to please her mother, just as she did when she was alive, and partly she thought tht her mother wouldn't want anyone else to come into their apartment, and partly because she herself wanted it to be just the two of them. But we never saw any indication that the mother was haunting the place. It was the daughter all along.

3.) Either it was the ghost, or Mariko's sister wanted Mariko with her - he smile as she let go didn't seem to be hostile, but rather fond. Mariko's mother said her sister was cold and alone etc. Maybe she just wanted Mariko there.

4.) This seems like a huge plot hole, and I seriously have no explanation. I'd say that they were the ghosts of the original mother and daughter, but it makes no sense to have them obviously visible to other people in broad daylight (the boyfriend of the girl who lived in the apartment before Markiko's sister). I guess we're supposed to take it as "they were ghosts all along!" but it is kinda weak.

5.) Another plot hole, if you ask me. I honestly don't have an explanation for this, maybee it was the ghost trying to get Mariko to go into the apartment. But where was Mariko's mother, in that case?

The ending just seemed to kinda fall apart along with the special effects, which is a shame because the tension in the first hour or so was really intense.

Re: 4

She is obviously MEANT to be the ghost at a former age, hence why we see her apartment in the same disarray, and she picks up the same teddy, also has a mother living alone with her, etc.

However, it doesn't work.

1. The actresses playing next door ghost and the main ghost in the flashback when they both first arrive at the apartment are completely different.

2. Ditto the mother next door, who is also a ghost, but clearly different from the 1303 ghost's mother.

3. So if they are ghosts who live next door, who is paying the rent?

4. The 1301 ghost-mother pushes past as Mariko looks into their apartment. But what the hell was she out doing? This was obviously a device to convince us that they weren't ghosts while making no sense in itself.

5.What kind of ghosts go out during the day and pay rent?

Therefore, in reality, she is just the crazy scary kid out of loads of J-horror films that they had to get into the movie somehow.

3)

I perceived it as the sister grabbed her hand before she fell to make sure, Mariko fell into the pool when she fell and then would survive. We hear a "splash" right when she lands.

I've always liked that word.. "gargantuan".. so rarely have an opportunity to use it in a sentence

Even if she did land in the pool, falling into water unprepared from such great height can be as deadly as landing on concrete.

but we don't know that for sure. So the end seems quite open?.

Don't know!
