Ep. 2.3...a bit offensive.

Okay, I'm an American. But I'm also a 12 year veteran, and did some time on foreign deployments. The portrayal here of the American military bugged me...particularly that line from the major to Kingdom about "someone has to defend your country". Now, we're far from perfect, and I know it well. But I never met ANYONE in my 12 years who had that kind of attitude towards the British. To most American servicemen/servicewomen, the British are are staunchest ally, and hardly need protection from us. We had great respect for the British military and their long history...I can't imagine anyone saying such a thing.

Here's to the health of Cardinal Puff.

That was the opinion of a writer who put those words into someone in the uniform of the US which does not exist. There are no Black Beret troops in the world, in the UK or anywhere else.

It's television. Britain and Canada are our best friends, you're absolutely right. Surely your aren't so thin-skinned as to have your feelings hurt over that awkward and badly written scene, are you? It was bad writing, surely, rather than a fling at the US. Britain stood with the US when 9/11 happened. British troops are still in Afghanistan. If an individual writer wishes to take potshots for whatever reason, we all know that we stand together. At least, some of us who are sensible and wise are aware of it. We know the price has been paid and it's still being paid. My nephew lost his buddy last month to suicide due to PTSD arising from service in Iraq.

It's media referencing the media.

I am a twenty-five year veteran of the United States Air Force. I have flown and tossed down beers, along with a few scotches, with our RAF bretheren, and the two services well respect one another. We josh and kibbitz, but the mutual respect is real.

We also recognize each other's support for our countries. But I don't think that attitude is reflected in among the common population. It is certainly not recognized by our television or movie media. The image projected and probably perceived by the British media, if not the British public, is that we think we won WW1, WW2, Korea, and both Gulf wars all by ourselves, that the RA, RN, and RAF got in our way more than helped.

I'm sure that no American could have reasonably taken greater offense in this scene than many British have taken with countless scenes in American movies and television series. As one grotesque example (one of my favorite programs as an ignorant child) the entire tv series "The Rat Patrol" was one long slap in the face to the actual "Long Range Desert Patrols" of the British army.

Enjoy the movies, but don't believe in them as history reference.

I immediately thought of this episode of Kingdom while watching BBC's Coast series. In the "Cork to Dublin" episode (series four, episode four), presenter Neil Oliver said that an Irish naval vessel investigated a boat after being tipped off by an American aircraft, which led to one of the largest drug busts in Irish history.

The writer of the Kingdon episode, while attempting to backhand American military presence in the UK, unwittingly provided a punchline to anyone who watches that particular episode of Coast.

You would really love Spooks. They show how many Brits really despise us for the wars we started that killed so many of their people
