Any other viewers in the states?

I've been watching Kingdom for a few weeks now on my local PBS station. Any other viewers from the United States?

reply

Absolutely. Our PBS network, UNCTV, just finished Ep 6 of series 1 last Sat. All six of series two are coming in the next six weeks. Also, WLIW-21 on Long Island is also showing it. They just started, only up to Ep 2 of series 1.

It wasn't until the entire season came out on DVD that I was able to watch this wonderful show. I am so glad I didn't miss it! I find I am more likely to enjoy BBC/Acorn Media shows than what is shown on the major US networks.

Same here. I am out of the US at the moment and was pleasantly surprised when I found quite a few British series available to watch on youtube, and that includes Kingdom.

Also discovered a few shows I never got around to watching before so I don't mind not having a good tv, I can watch shows I want to watch on my laptop. I had a mild scare though when I first got here. I accidentally cracked my screen (closed the lid not realizing I had something hard left inside and it cracked the screen). Luckily I was able to change screens for less than a hundred bucks and that included labor! I didn't have to leave the thing with the technician either, it was all done in less than a half hour. I doubt it took ten minutes to tell you the truth and they even installed a screen protector.

You are only limited by your own imagination.

I have been watching for the last month and very sorry I missed the first 2-3 episodes. I love it! Stephen Fry made a multi-episode apprearance on Bones and he was lovely! The series; however, is absolutley entrancing, well acted by all, and makes me happy to have found it and it gets Tivo'd every week! I hope PBS keeps bringing the series over here!

Well, we are very disgruntled at our house - We watched series 1 throughout on Channel 24, KVCR, California - loved it, started watching Series 2 (of which I stupidly missed the first episode, hope it will be repeated some time) and imagine our chagrin when Episode 2.4 was cavalierly taken off the air on Sunday 5/18, to be replaced by an ancient Andrea Bocelli concert as part of a pedge drive (what else?) and nothing has been seen or heard of Kingdom since, and it's not scheduled for next Sunday either. HOnestly,. I don't know how these PBS stations expect you to contribute when they do things like that. I have emailed them and told them, but have little hope of redress. Anyway, if there's nothing doing I'll just have to wait for Netflix, I guess.

Our PBS station is repeating series 2 starting 9 June. Thank goodness Kingdom isn't an hour show, Masterpiece is repeating the Austen season so I can get a clean recording. So double squee.

When Kingdom was broadcast here (UK) it was an hour-long show because you get 4 slots of adverts in the middle.

If your broadcast is without the irritating rubbish that is a commercial break, you're luckier than we are!

PBS (public broadcasting channel) is a commercial free venue somewhat. But we do get pledge drives every two months (or so it seems) which make one hour shows 90 minute extraveganzas. So we don't escape money making schemes that is American television these days. Even on PBS.

I got series 1 with no ads thanks to PBS, now I hope to get series 2 as well. I missed half the episodes of series 2 the first time around...

Hope PBS picks up QI, that would be the perfect venue, esp for a weekend night.

California hear and an avid watcher, love this show!

I watch Kingdom on PBS as well. PBS pledge drive programming irritates me to no end. I probably do the majority of my tv viewing on the PBS regular schedule. I sent an email to our local station regarding the change of programming during pledge drives. Their explanation was that the people who send in money want to see certain programming. This makes no sense to me as I am one of the financial supporters and I do this because of the regular programming, not the crap they put out there (ie an hour and a half Suze Orman special) during pledge drives. The people who watch PBS regularly are the same people who support PBS. I wish they would understand this simple concept and stop messing with the programming.

I live in the States and been catching the repeats on PBS.

I must say, I love this show and totally hooked!

I watched and loved all three seasons - but I'm sorry it ended so abruptly. Was there a fourth?

reply

Just watched it on PBS Channel 21 in the NYC area.

Also interested in seeing Brit dramas, but he seems rather meek - even when another guy gets bashed in the head by goons, he seems to react like "Oh my, you've bumped your head..."

But I'll try another ep...

I was a ballerina! Graceful! DELICATE!

We all need a lesson in meekness. Remember, the meek shall inherit the earth.

I know shows like Kingdom will be overshadowed by flashier and meaner shows, but for us who are always on the lookout for a refuge from the darker aspects of our day to day lives, it is a breath of fresh air.

I live in the SF Bay Area and fell into Kingdom on one of our several local PBS stations last fall. I am not sure which season it was but I adored it. It is up to each individual PBS station to purchase programming and that's why there's no consistency among them. I have satellite tv as well and BBC America is on it but it rarely has any of the really excellent programming that I know exists in the UK. I spend each July in Oxford, and while it would be difficult to sink lower than some UK programming, most US programming rarely excels the best of it! Doc Martin is another outstanding ITV (a "network" in the UK) program that IS available on Netflix (two seasons' worth, anyway) and I highly recommend it to any of you who like Kingdom. So was Lost in Austen, a four part series about a modern woman who is transported back to the time of Pride and Prejudice. It was just released in the US on DVD as a seamless movie length video and it was outstanding.
If any of you UK viewers can suggest other shows like these that we Yanks should keep watch out for, I'd be most grateful indeed. I hope that Netflix will carry an increasingly larger assortment. I may even buy some in the UK this summer, as I purposely bought a region-free DVD player so I can play UK region disks at home.
Let's support outstanding television!

Absolutely! Love the show. This coming week (17th of June 2008) Kingdom will be replaced by new Mystery (Masterpiece Mystery -- Inspector Lewis), so assume WLIW finished the season & will air the second season another time.

Someone who works at WLIW e-mailed me: "Kingdom will likely return to the schedule when the new episodes of Masterpiece Mystery! conclude."

reply

Yes! I love the show. I've always liked Stephen Fry and I think he's really hit his stride with this role. I wish they'd release a Region 1 DVD of Seasons 1 and 2. I purchased a Region 2 DVD from Amazon.co.uk and hacked my U.S. player so it can play the DVDs. I'd like to buy about 5 sets of the DVDs to give as gifts to friends and family here in the states, but they don't have hacked players so I guess I'll find other gifts for them. (Off topic side note: I can really understand encoding DVDs to ensure that they cannot be indiscriminately copied, but I do not understand the whole region thing -- I know it has to do with staging the release of movies in different countries, but I really think that in the end it limits total revenue for a movie, rather than helping it. I have a whole ton of DVDs on my "gift idea" list for friends in the states that I'm not buying because they are only available in Region 2 format -- e.g., "Our Friends in the North" (fantastic series) -- sorry just had to vent there).

Anyway, I'm half way through Season 1 and looking forward to viewing Season 2! -- and hoping that a Season 3 is really in the works.

You can ask your friends what dvd players they have and see if there is a hack for them. Most brands are hackable, I think only Sony can't be, but don't take my word on it.

The alternative (and only if your friends have dvd burning capabilities) is getting a dvd duplicating software. When you copy the dvd, the region code doesn't get copied. I buy other region dvds and make copies of my dvds so the originals don't get scratched or damaged. It also helps when I travel, I am not so cautious at packing the discs in the checked in luggage for fear of losing the dvds. My hand carry luggage isn't so heavy any more. And no thank you on the ipod. After seeing how Apple halved the price of the iphone, I am not touching any Apple product when it is first rolled out unless Apple gives it to me free.

reply

Oh I do. I got into it after seeing several screens of Tony Slattery in teh show and decided to check it out via youtube.

I fell in love with it and hoping to get the first season for x-mas.

Can't wait for season 3 to air. Wonder what happened to Simon and what will happen to our favorite guys and gals.

I live in Ohio but grew up in east London and had an Aunt who lived in Swaffam where Kingdom is filmed so as a little girl we had a holiday or two up in Norfolk in the countryside. I remember the people all talking really slow and the sea being so cold that we all turned blue in about five minutes and that was when it was calm enough to actually go in but boy was is pretty and very flat not a hill in sight, bit like mid Ohio really! Happy days
