'Snorro'

That's what one critic is calling this series.
And based on the episode summaries I've read so far (not showing in Canada yet), I have to agree.

Telenovela or not, it just takes way too long for the plot to get going in each episode, and by the time it finally does, you're listening to that song and reading the credits again.

And poor Marlena Favela was being promoted during the launch as an equal for Zorro, physically and emotionally. But with her character now into her second month stuck in a prison, she's not being given that opportunity.

It's time this show started living up to its potential.
The old Duncan Regehr series from the 1990's was much more interesting.

I'm not sure who originated it, but "Snorro" was a nickname for Zorro that came from one of the fan forums.

Other nicknames included Estwit (Esmeralda), Donde Ego (Don Diego de la Vega), Diesme (Diego and Esmeralda as a couple, a la "Bragelina"), Mangle (Mariangel), Pizza (Pizarro), Iron Maiden (Sara Kali while in the iron mask in earlier episodes), and my personal favourite, Montero's nickname, Tinhorn Despot. The Tinhorn part makes no sense to me whatsoever, but there you go.

Thanks. At the moment, I'm just watching the occasional clip on YouTube, because I think the show may come to Canada in the Fall. We have a couple of Spanish-language channels on the dial, and one of them already shows "Gata Salvaje" with Marlene Favela, so I think it will show up here soon.

Also liked the NW version of Zorro!

A more family-oriented version than "Espada/Rosa", but it was fun, and it had a strong heroine who got to shine in a couple of episodes.

Actually, I think the show is picking up now as it nears the end of its first season. Esmeralda finally managed to escape, befiriended some Amazons, returned to Los Angeles, got to do some fencing, and finally reunited with Diego on Thursday night's episode.
They always save the best for last on shows like this, it seems to me.

Thanks again for the replies. : )

It's a soap.

Anyone who cannot understand that, shouldn't be watching it. Soaps are like that. They take forever. They squeeze and squeeze every last drop out of every moment and milk a scene to the point where it's too long. EVERY soap does that. This, and the overuse of the 4 or 5 music tracks the novella is only able to use, are all to be expected. As is the less than stellar action sequences, b/c this IS NOT a high budget summer blockbuster.

But, where it stands tall is in the story and character development. That's where this soap is doing wonderfully incredible, while also setting new tones and concepts for the Zorro mythos. The action is good, and while everything is overextended, for a soap.....this is probably one of the best. It's a really really good soap opera, if you can deal with all the mushy mushy stuff and overextended scenes (like looking at every single person in the damn room for a "reaction shot" after a big revelation....it's to be expected. It's part of the soap sterotype).
