Why, when Hermilia's boyfriend found out about the raffle, and came to her, and instead of being angry, tells her he wants to buy all the tickets himself - why does she get mad at him, and insist on going through with the raffle?

Perhaps it's because she felt that she doesn't deserve him being so kind to her. She was crying but they were tears of rage - with everything - herself and her life.

She was angry at herself, because she loved/liked him and if her life had gone differently she might have ended up with him, but as it was, she needed money to escape and so she came up with this idea. The raffle had a side effect of making her a whore within the community so she would have to leave when it was finished anyway. As such she knew she could not stay with João even if she wanted to, so she felt she had to push him away to make a clean break, which was very painful for her.
