the ending (spoiler)

did anyone else find it frustrating that he (nick) turned to drugs at the end? i just thought it was really irresponsible of him after seeing what it did to jane, and especially now that he's looking after the little girl...poor kid, i feel so sorry for her....

I think the opposite. There was a scene between Andy Lau and Daniel Wu where he doesnt understand why people get into drugs even though they know its bad for them. The answer is its an irrational response. And that irrationality is what got Daniel to go for the needle. Its just good luck that the daughter was there to stop him.

Well, In my point of view. It's just like Daniel said in the end that loneliness might be what drives people into drug addictness. And just like his condition in the end where he gets no one to turn to, seems like he's just about ready to shrink into the world of drug addictness out of his loneliness. Well luckily there was the little girl right up there to remind him otherwise.

I guess it's also some kind of moral lesson in the end to state that no matter how bad the situation, there is always someone/something for you to turn into rather than to turn into a junkie. Well, it's my opinion.

reply

Definitely. If he would have gone ahead, I'd have rated the movie no higher than a 5. It's a 7 now because she intervened, but I was really freaking out a little.

reply

Who is to say he took the drugs? He might have prepared to inject himself but the girl certainly, in some way, intervened. He also never showed symptoms of a "high" on camera. Is it the emptiness or the drugs that are more evil? The girl answers this question by innocently throwing out the paraphernalia.

I maintain that he never injected the heroine. The girl beat him to it.

i really wanted Daniel to become a junkie. I just dont like rats, and thats wat he was. The fact that he betrayed Andy lau was just too much to take for me, the only person he trusted was daniel and daniel betrays him.

This was an awsome movie, character dvlopment was awsome. I wanna punch daniel if i see him lol.

Well, that's what we call 'Professional'. He did just what he supposed to do. But still I doubt that someone would be 'professional' enough when it comes to the real situation. Especially when you have involved too deep emotionally with someone.

Yeah, Daniel deserved a big hard whomping punch, I couldn't agree more. Poor dumb Andy...

He was an undercover cop, he was doing his job. He helped ending a drug trafic. Andy Lau's character was killing people selling heroin you dumb head !

I agree with mmr762, I also think the girl beat him to it. He first lay down on the couch, thinking if he should do it. Then the girl comes at the moment he wants to take it for the first time and stops him.

He's obviously hesitating about the injection, otherwise the little girl wouldn't be "lucky" enough to stop him on the act. Also, at the start of the film, she threw away the needle on her mom's arm. She must understand what Nick intends to do.

I think Nick was completely drained after the arrest. He'd even gone so far as to tricking Jane's husband into an execution. He was clearly driven in his own cause, knowing the full extent of Quin's evil, and confronted him in the end. It's totally heartbreaking to see him say "We meet in hell!" to Jane's husband. He surely couldn't forgive himself for everything happened, but I totally agree with what he did because he really had conscience.

IMO those who would readily stick a gun to other's face and deny any evil they've done, or those who would beat another up for a promotion. Now those are real rats.

My take on the ending is this: Daniels character was always trying to understand WHY people did drugs but what he didn't realize is that he was using all along himself. The JOB was his drug! Living that life, faking it but believing it could all work out without consequences was him lying to himself the same way a drug addict lies about quitting.
He was the same as Jane because they both lied about everything to get what they needed, that fix.
Once the job was over...he felt what Jane felt when she needed her fix...emptiness. So, that is why he decided to try drugs...to see if what she said was true, if they would truly fill his empty void.
I think that is why he saw the vision of Quin and Jane, because he realized that part of his life was over and all that was left was nothingness....or so he thought until the little girl came in and saved him. I would like to think that he never used..that he let fate decide and fate brought her to him..but that is just me.
