Anybody else wish Will Ferrell had played Dewey Cox?

The humor of this movie is SO Will Ferrell. I think Ferrell would have been perfect to play Dewey Cox. Nothing against John C. Reilly, but I like Reilly better as a supporting actor than as a lead actor.

I liked this movie, but I think I would have loved it with Will Ferrel playing Dewey. Anyone else feel this way?

reply

Except Dewey needs a GREAT voice, which John C Reilly has. Ferrell probably has an okay singing voice (SNL players usually do), but it's not the same.

reply

I agree!!! This was John's chance to shine as a lead, he has a wonderful singing voice.

As much as I thin Will Ferrell could have done a good job with it, I also think he might have gone to over the top in some places. Which have made it just another dumb WF comedy.

reply

Correct. It would have been nice to see him in another role in this movie, but Ferrell couldn't have pulled off this song

Reilly can do almost all of what Ferrel can do, but there are many things that Reilly can do that Ferrel can't. I think the role was properly cast, but I don't doubt that the movie would still have been funny if Ferrel had played the lead.

Nah, this role was better for JCR. He deserves some lead roles and this was one of them.

And then.....AND THEN THE CAGE COMES DOWN!

reply

No, Reilly nailed it.

reply

You always hear about someone who was considered for a prominant role that went to someone else. I'ts hard to speculate how this would have turned out. Maybe better, maybe worse. I think JCR did an excellant job, and in my opinion, Will Ferrell would have ruined it. I also give props to JCR, since despite his long time collaboartion with Will Ferrell, he did not take the easy way out and have Ferrell make a cameo. The success or failure of this fil rested entirely on John C. Reilly, and he did a great job.

reply

Will Ferrel would overact and screw up everything. Everything would be more exaggerated than it should

John C. Reilly is a very talented (and underrated) actor who usually delivers. Talented actors are good no matter they got a lead role, supporting role or justa small role. This movie was an outstanding work from him, he nailed the role.

reply

Exactly. It has to be believable to be funny and Ferrel is almost never funny because of that. Most (99) of the stuff Ferrel is in would be greatly improved by his absence. His wildlife ranger character in the Jay and Silent Bob movie, case in point, is an example of his turd in the punchbowl presence.

Gee, guess somebody doesn't like WF.

NO!

reply

nope. Ferrell would have overacted and there surely would have been a scene where he runs around doing that over the top screaming thing that he seems to do in most of his movies. Reily nailed it. i think he gave the character a charm that Ferrell wouldnt have

reply

Ferrel is a zero talent, he should never tried to act or do comedy, he's never been funny and never will be funny, EVER

reply

I'm curious- what movies/actors do you find funny? I'm not trying to be confrontational at all, just trying to get a better sense of your comedy baseline.

I'm glad I read through the comments first because this is exactly what I was going to say. I love Will Ferrell - but only to a point. his screaming drives me bananas
