Why the need to pick up the cat?

Sorry to bother...

I watched the Movie a few days ago in Essen at the premiere and, in general, really liked it.

However, there is one point that kept me wondering throughout the whole movie (but, I thought this was nasty to ask Julie Delpy herself after the the movie was over, although I was very close to doing so):

As far as I understood, Marion and her boyfriend both live in the States - right? Why would the two would honestly consider dragging the cat from the States to Paris, only to drop him off in Paris while going on a two week vacation to Venice? This seems weird, and as far as I know, Julie Delpy has a cat herself, so the thought of doing so surprises me even more. Although Marion keeps her apartment in Paris, the cat comes from the States (for example, she complains about how much the cat has gained weight due to her mother feeding him in the last two weeks)!

Wouldn't the story have been just as good if the plot said, they simply went to Paris to fly back and meet her parents?

I'm grateful for any suggestions or answers...

When you have a cat

It is difficult to leave it to aliens (americans for example)
therefore you prefer either to carry it or to leave it to friends

When you have no friends, when you are in love, and when your mother lives in Paris it is therefore logical to travel first in Paris leave your cat and enjoys your travel to Venitia

Well, the point is, I have a cat myself and that's why I would always have my cat stay at my place when I'm away while someone takes care of her - travelling for cats is so over-exhausting and frightening, and they are so attached to their home. And concerning Europe: Just imagine alle the extra vaccines the cat has to receive before being allowed to get on the plane.....

Was it said in the movie that she/they doesn't/don't have any friends? Besides, aren't there professional cat sitters in the States, too? (In Europe, where I'm from, there are)

OK, I know it's an irrelevant topic, but it keeps bothering me....

i agree, i keep my cats at home when i travel :) however, i made up a back story, the mom loves the cat, she wanted to see her, so she took her w them. maybe the cat was born in paris?!

That cat is flippin' HUGE. And it's her cat in real life, too.

Must feed it nothing but brie...

I think she needed to bring the cat with her because she was also bringing him -- her boyfriend. She views them both as pets. Interchangeable.

That's a good thesis.... I'll have to think about that one...

Maybe she didn't want to drop it off at a kennel or have some stranger in her apartment doing whatever for 2 weeks or maybe she didn't trust anyone to take care of her cat quite as well as she does. Maybe she took the cat to Paris because she knew her parents would take care of him and she trusted them. Maybe she wanted her cat to be around people he knew while she was away. I mean 2 weeks is a long time for an animal to go without seeing it's owner. Plus she said she lived there 2 months out of the year, I'm sure she brings the cat with her, so he should be familiar with her parents house seeing as her's is right upstairs.

I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived a few weeks while she loved me.

My favorite scene from this film was the one where Marion and her mother were arguing in French about how fat the cat had gotten. So hilarious!

reply

I loved that scene as well.

OMG Jean-Luc is too FAT to get on the plane!

And then the father comes to take part in the argument and he is wearing an apron with a picture of the cat on it.
